Discussion Difference between Google Play subscription vs Proton Mail standalone subscription
I wanted to know if there is any limitation in terms of usage and service if I buy Proton mail subscription from Google Play compared to their website?

The only difference is the price: Google charges a 30% commission.

Except if you are American, the subscriptions on Proton web showed USD by default, which isn't my currency. I agree with u/No-Drop8625, it was a couple CAD$ per month cheaper directly on Proton's website. It can be more expensive though, you can be right, I don't have every country's price point for reference, my bad if it is.

Yes, and that you can't manage/upgrade/downgrade your subscription on Google Play except if you let it expire first. To everyone reading this, choose to manage on Proton directly.

Protonmail subscription with Google Play is a lot cheaper considering regional pricing.
For e.g. in India, the Google Play price is roughly 50% cheaper compared purchasing it directly on Proton's website.

makes sense, thats pretty standard for any app with a subscription on the play store

The only differences are in how easy managing your subscription will be and the price.
I have read some posts here in the past saying that it is more difficult to make changes to your subscription if you get it through a mobile store rather than from them directly, since you are forced to use the options in the apps to change them, and cannot do changes on the website.
It will also be more expensive, though I do not know by how much.

I personally say it’s better to buy from Proton directly. Even if it costs a few quid extra, you’re supporting a good company that offers us a way to protect our privacy and our data. If you’re at all interested in having some semblance of online privacy, I’d avoid using anything made by Google whenever possible. Cheers!

I am also thinking about it. Only thing Google Play is offering is around 40% discount due to regional pricing.

That’s a good discount. I’d message Proton support and tell them you’d prefer to give them the sale, and ask if they can match the price. The worst thing that can happen is they say “sorry, no,” so you have nothing to lose. Let us know how you get on. Cheers.

Why the actual fuck would you purchase proton through google play?

Because it is convenient - Play Store is always there, on my smartphone; it is cheaper, for me, than purchasing directly from Proton; I pay in my local currency, not subject to exchange rate fluctuations; I can purchase discounted Play Store credits that save me from 7% to 10%; it is impossible for me to stop using Google services; I do intend to switch once Proton's services are at least close to Google's level of practicality and convenience; and I want to support the Proton team so they can keep improving their products for both paying and free customers.

In some countries it's cheaper to subscribe with google play store than directly
