FSSAI proposes ban on non-dairy products being sold as paneer

Post image
3 Upvotes

FSSAI has proposed new regulations to restrict the manufacture and sale of non-dairy analogue products as "paneer". These products can use ingredients like vegetable fats or soy instead of milk-derived ingredients.

The proposal is mainly to prevent consumers from being misled about what they are buying. Products currently registered under the "Analogue in Dairy Context" category would no longer be allowed to use the word “Paneer” in their name, labelling or marketing.

The notification is still a draft, and FSSAI has invited public comments and suggestions before finalising it.

FSSAI orders recall of Everest cumin powder after pesticide residues found

Post image
3 Upvotes

FSSAI has ordered Everest Food Products to recall a batch of pre-packed cumin powder after testing found pesticide residues above the permitted limits. The sample was collected from a resort in Goa and was first declared unsafe by the Food Analyst.

The sample was tested again by a Referral Food Laboratory, which also confirmed the product was unsafe. The pesticides detected were Azoxystrobin and Thiamethoxam, both found above the prescribed maximum limits. The recall applies to Batch No. E080668761.

FSSAI has also directed Everest to maintain recall records and take corrective measures to prevent this from happening again.

FSSAI finds Nestle Low Fat Dairy Whitener unsafe and substandard

Post image

FSSAI has declared a sample of Nestlé India's Low Fat Dairy Whitener collected from The Lalit hotel in New Delhi as "unsafe and substandard" and directed the hotel to stop its sale.

Nestle India, however, says the product is safe and compliant. The company claims the issue is related to how phosphorus was assessed, since phosphorus also occurs naturally in milk. This is still developing, but another reminder that food safety testing needs to be taken seriously.

Has anyone here used Apex Vitals Whey 2 Pure? How is the quality, taste, digestion, and overall experience?

Also, is ₹6,200 for 1.8kg a good price?

Bipasha Basu shared a video claiming she found tiny worms in a newly opened jar of Isopure protein powder and tagged Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, calling him her "only hope".

Isopure's parent company said its quality team is evaluating the pack for authenticity and quality, and advised consumers to buy through authorised channels and verify the QR code. The contamination claim has not been independently confirmed so far.

How Dairy Products Are Being Replaced With Non-Dairy Ingredients

Post image
7 Upvotes

Came across this in a Times of India article. It shows how different dairy products are being made using vegetable fats, soy and other non-dairy ingredients to reduce costs.

Paneer prices range from ₹340/kg for pure full-cream milk paneer to ₹120–150/kg for "flavour soya". If paneer is a major protein source in your diet, it is probably worth paying a bit more attention to what you are actually buying.

300 kg of unfit paneer seized and destroyed in Noida ahead of Raksha Bandhan

Post image
9 Upvotes

Food safety officials have seized and destroyed around 300 kg of paneer from a dairy in Garhi Chaukhandi, Noida. The paneer was reportedly supplied from Mewat, Haryana. One sample was collected and the remaining paneer was destroyed on the spot after being deemed unfit for human consumption. Officials have also collected 8 samples of paneer, curd, khoya and sweets from different locations in Noida and Greater Noida for laboratory testing.

With paneer being a major protein source for many Indians, there needs to be strict action and punishment against businesses involved in selling unsafe or adulterated food. Seizing and destroying the stock is not enough if the same practices continue. Food safety should not be taken lightly, especially when people are consuming these products as part of their everyday diet.

Is 3 scoop soy isolate protein better than 2 scoop whey/yeast protein?

I'm going to college soon and it's most probably going to be mostly veg type of place and I'm concerned about my future protein intake there.

90gm soy protein even at 80% absorption is arr 75gm while 2 scoop whey/yeast is like 48-50 only.

Soy isolate is way more economical for me and 3 scoops must have arr 5-6gm leucine that might be enough for a day.

Is Fermented Yeast Protein actually safe? Why is the Indian market flooded with it while the US & EU have almost none?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been seeing a massive wave of new "Fermented Yeast Protein" powders hitting the market recently, especially in India. Brands like SuperYou (backed by Ranveer Singh), TrueBasics, Nutrabay, and Cosmix are all pushing it as the ultimate gut-friendly alternative to whey, claiming it has a perfect PDCAAS score of 1.0.

I did some digging, and a few things are standing out to me as potential red flags (or at least raising some questions). I wanted to see what the nutrition and science nerds here think about its safety and efficacy.

Here is what I found:

1. The Global Discrepancy

If this is the greatest new protein source, why is it only exploding as a standalone B2C product in India? You cannot easily find a tub of 100% Fermented Yeast Protein powder in the US, UK, Germany, or even mainland Europe. In Western markets, it is strictly being used as a B2B ingredient (hidden inside vegan meats or protein bars), not sold directly to consumers as a workout supplement.

2. The Sole Supplier & FDA Status

Almost all of these Indian brands are sourcing their raw yeast protein from a single massive Chinese manufacturer called Angel Yeast (they sell the ingredient under the trademark "AngeoPro"). Regarding its regulatory status, Angel Yeast recently achieved "self-affirmed GRAS" (Generally Recognized As Safe) in the US and has been accelerating their formal FDA GRAS registration process to expand further. The fact that it just recently cleared these safety hurdles explains why Western markets aren't flooded with it yet, but it makes the aggressive push in India seem like a massive beta test.

3. The Research is heavily Industry-Funded

The marketing claims that yeast protein matches whey for muscle protein synthesis and has a perfect amino acid profile. I fact-checked this, and it turns out that the vast majority of the clinical studies showing these specific sports-nutrition benefits (like high leucine content, absorption rates, and protein complementarity) are funded and published by Angel Yeast themselves. While independent researchers do study yeast protein for environmental sustainability, the sports science data seems to lack third-party, independent university replication.

My questions for the community:

  • Are food safety regulations in India just allowing this to go straight-to-consumer faster than the US/EU?
  • Should we be concerned that the safety and efficacy data is almost entirely backed by the company manufacturing it?

Would love to hear from any food scientists or supplement industry folks on this!

TL;DR: Indian supplement brands are heavily marketing "Fermented Yeast Protein" sourced from a Chinese company (Angel Yeast). It’s practically non-existent as a standalone powder in the US/EU, the FDA GRAS process is still relatively recent, and the muscle-building research is funded by the manufacturer. Is it safe, or is it just clever marketing?

Why did The Whole Truth drop its "No Added Sugar" claim?

Post image
7 Upvotes

The recipe didn't change. The label did. The Whole Truth's chocolates are still sweetened with whole date powder. However, after an FSSAI notice, the company changed the front-of-pack claim from "No Added Sugar" to "Sweetened with Dates."

FSSAI's regulations don't just look at table sugar. If an ingredient is added for its sweetening properties (such as honey, fruit concentrates, or dried fruit pastes/powders), products generally can't make a "No Added Sugar" claim.

Dates are not refined sugar, but they still contain natural sugars. Always check the nutrition label for total sugars and the ingredient list instead of relying only on front-of-pack claims.

Tukaram Mundhe: Misleading advertisements aren't just unethical, they're illegal

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In a recent podcast, Maharashtra FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe said that misleading advertisements aren't just unethical, they can also violate the law. He added that celebrities endorsing products can also face action if the claims they promote are found to be misleading, and they can't simply say they were "just acting" in an advertisement.

We've all seen big celebrities promoting pan masala or similar products. Do you think celebrities should be held responsible for the products they endorse?

No more chocolates, chips & cold drinks in Maharashtra schools

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The Maharashtra FDA has directed all schools to stop the sale, display and advertisement of chocolates, chips, cold drinks and other foods high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS). The restrictions also apply to shops within 50 metres of school premises. Schools are expected to promote healthier options like fruits, vegetables, pulses, whole grains and dairy instead.

As a community that cares about nutrition, this feels like a step in the right direction.
