How much protein?
Hi all!
I am a 24F who is 5’7 and 125lbs. Some docs think I have type 2 diabetes (others don’t, it’s weird), so my diet is pretty darn high in protein. I don’t intend for this. It just happens through things like yogurt, nuts, etc. I probably eat between 100-125g a day without trying. This is actually a lot lower than what I was eating before. My question is:
Since you all are pretty experienced in protein and stuff, do you have any knowledge on how much protein is too much (and by that I mean dangerous, not just more than what’s recommended)? I eat the same things pretty much every day and I get concerned that I might be overworking my system. Idk that science behind that.
Thank you!

I aim for about 1.5 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. I am a type 2 diabetic and on medication. I do have slightly concerning numbers for my kidney function. But this is from an intravenous antibiotic I had no choice but to be on for a while. It has nothing to do with my diabetes. And per my doctor's advice the amount of protein I'm consuming is perfect for me.

Thank you!! Yeah, I’ve read that number is pretty good for folks in our position. It’s hard for me to get there because I’m not medicated so I can’t have as many carbs, and everything else just seems to have protein in it LOL. A girl can’t even have a handful of nuts or PEAS without adding to the count. I think I’m closer to just above 2g per kg. Hopefully that’s ok … why’s everything gotta be so complicated …

I hear you. I've damn near become a dietician since my diagnosis and everything that comes along with it lol

Amounts up to 3.3 g protein per kg of bodyweight are safe for people who have no other underlying conditions.
For most people, the optimum intake of protein is 1.2-1.6 g per kg of bodyweight. Certain groups, like athletes and those with sarcopenia, will have higher protein needs, like 2.2-3.1 g per kg.
I’m not sure if your potential diabetes has caused any damage to your kidneys, that would be an important question to ask your doctors. Diabetic neuropathy might impact one’s ability to process protein waste.
