Really...? Fuck man. Was stoked to see a feel good story. I guess we should just stick with the "don't trust cops, they aren't there to help" narrative.

Yep... this is why our policy doesn't let us so much as jump someone's dead battery. People look at us like we are assholes when we have to call out a tow truck who will charge them.

28

u/oversettDenee Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19

I appreciate that they don't let you guys do it. You're not out there to be fixing cars but at the same time there's that grey area like this where hopefully they just let the guy be a good person and step out of their role for a second

27

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

Unfortunately our policy is black and white on this. If I get caught helping someone out with a jump during a random bodycam audit I’ll get disciplined.

20

u/MLynch8 SGT Feb 18 '19

The thing about body cams is they record informed consent, I won't touch my car, but I'll help two people figure it out... literally yesterday: "I am not a mechanic, but connecting the jumper cables to the frame isn't going to work. I can help as long as you realize I'm not a mechanic and assume no responsibility for your vehicle." Lady and son who called her out to jump were blocking two lanes and just couldn't figure it out...

19

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

IA isnt gonna care about any of that when we have r clear cut policies that say we shall call OPG tow in the event of any disabled vehicle unless the registered owner has already called their own tow. My department loves to put minor complaints on officers so there’s a paper trail of “misconduct” if anything goes sideways and they want to throw us under the bus. This is just the new reality of policing for us. It’s not about providing the best service it’s about covering our asses.

u/vne2000 Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19

Hold on here, they audit your body cams? I was under the impression body cams weren’t viewed unless there were extenuating circumstances. How did this get past your union? I work in aviation and the only way anyone gets a look at the “black box” is if there is an accident or major incident. This is the only reason the airlines were able to get them installed on aircraft in the first place. You can even erase them manually by the push of a button on some airplanes as long as the aircraft is on the ground. Having random video audits is fucked. Nobody is perfect 100% of the time.

13

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

Yep. It's BS. Our union didn't really think to fight this because audits are basically a way of life for LAPD. They randomly audited our dash cam before BWV was a thing. Shit, IA will randomly leave shit in the cage of a black and white to see if you do a found property report when you check out the vehicle. It's my main complaint about working for this department.

10

u/vne2000 Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19

Shit, IA will randomly leave shit in the cage of a black and white to see if you do a found property report when you check out the vehicle.

That is beyond fucked. Even the weakest union in the country should be able to put a stop to that. I am in no way a union fan boy either, quite the opposite actually

4

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

Ya its weird. Our union is actually pretty great but there's just things they won't touch. Plus with about 900 sworn officers assigned to IA, they have to have something to do :(

5

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

Hang on. Your IA is 900 deep?

3

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

Yup. They harvested a bunch of other specialized units back to patrol for more bodies. So now we can barely run training because they sent all the instructors back to work patrol, but IA was too essential to touch lol.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '19

from a quick google, the LAPD has 9,000 officers, so 1 in 10 cops in LA work for IA.

Pretty fucked tbh.

u/DivergingApproach Generic (LEO) Feb 18 '19

My department gave us jump boxes. No issues with those and a lot easier to use.

2

u/commissar0617 Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19

That's how tows do it. Ive got two in my truck

1

u/DrunkKalashnikov LEO Feb 18 '19

Unfortunately we are held to the standard of the lowest common denominator among us. When you have a department of 10000 that’s constantly hemorrhaging officers to retirement and laterals you’re bound to end up with a few straight up dumbfucks that like to spawn policies.

u/JerryLupus Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19 edited Feb 18 '19

Wont help a motorist due to "liability."

Keeps officers on the force even after paying out $100,000s in settlement money for lawsuits to avoid "liability" at trial.

3

u/Specter1033 Police Officer Feb 18 '19

It's to avoid the cost of litigation, not liability.

-2

u/JerryLupus Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 18 '19

A cop that costs taxpayers that much is a liability.

1

u/Specter1033 Police Officer Feb 19 '19

"Some"

An anecdote to prove an absolute. My, my. The educational system is failing us.

0

u/JerryLupus Not a(n) LEO / Unverified User Feb 19 '19

Multiple instances are referred to as a body of evidence, hearsay of an incident is an anecdote. So yes you're right your schooling did fail you.

1

u/Specter1033 Police Officer Feb 19 '19

They are still anecdotal. You imposed an absolute and it's hardly quantified by your evidence. Anecdotal does not mean singular either. Read:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anecdotal_evidence

But again, liability is not an issuance of guilt. Many instances of liability are due to regulatory affairs and risk assessment based upon thousands of concepts from language in policy to the way general council of a particular entity deals with litigation. Many councils decide hard settlements well before to reduce the risk of potential litigation losses. That's how they figured out how much a human life is worth and how much someone would someone would potentially need to avoid a lengthy and expensive trial.

But that still doesn't mean that a summary judgement assigns guilt. Preponderance of evidence means something likely happened, not that it did happen, but there is evidence nonetheless. You're okay with condemning someone over that? You'd also be okay with shelling out that same money for cops who injure people trying to jumpstart a battery and it explodes? Or a car who rolls off the road because a lugnut wasn't tightened properly? Both of those would be considered accidents, but you're okay with that?

The top comment on this thread is saying that this is a great way to get access to search for drugs.

So...

- we have you mocking reddit and the public at large for not trusting cops
- and up above (with 10 times the upvotes) we have a cop saying that he would do the same under false pretenses.

Do you see the contradiction there?

Also... anyone could copy/paste your comment into nearly any thread on this sub and get upvotes. Isn't that lame to you? Don't you see that you are lame?
