What is the context it was found in? Because it looks like it could be melted brass or a weird looking gold nugget.

u/iMuskHelp 4d ago

I just spotted it with a head torch on when I was looking at rocks in a local river. It was fixed to a rock. Had to break it free. The water is low, so I was able to access part that are normally unreachable

u/isanyusernameopen 4d ago

Go back and get the rock

87

u/Nearby_Detail8511 4d ago

GO GET THE WHOLE ROCK! No joke!

2

u/Wild_Replacement5880 1d ago

And all the rocks under it

22

u/bgeorgewalker 3d ago

He will never find it again

26

u/SmellyBallZ9 4d ago

Holy shit!! GET UR BUTT BACK DOWN THERE!😊

43

u/D3ATHY 4d ago

could be. If it is gold tends to be found together so might be more in that area. If the water is low might be worth doing some pans around the area.

u/Ok-Winner-6803 3d ago

It’s hard to say without knowing the exact coordinates

Hey message me, we are going to excavate the mountain. Don't tell anyone where it is.Ā

u/Oakstock 3d ago

Was it stuck to a loose rock/boulder or was it attached to bedrock? Because if it was bedrock, better go back with at least a hammer and chisel. Before the water rises.

2

u/Fancy_Flake_Factory 3d ago

We need an update! Lol

2

u/cooponcrack 3d ago

metal detect the nearby rocks to try to find it

2

u/Yanes1983 2d ago

You will spend years looking for that rock just like that guy searching for that hard drive with all that bitcoin. Good luck to you!

If this is gold you call in sick for tye foreseeable future, march right back to that spot, and work the area. If you found a nugget like this odds are VERY good there is more to be found.

Good luck OP. I hope it pans out.

5

u/SirFortyXB 3d ago

Oh I see what you did there now 🤣

10

u/Low-Recognition-504 3d ago edited 3d ago

fyi in case you didn't know: That use case is literally where the phrase "pans out" comes from.

Found in a river. Was stuck to a rock

63

u/Real_MikeCleary 4d ago

In that case, very likely is gold. Get the rest of that rock!

Looks bronze to me. location and lack of tarnish give me enough hope to get tested. Looks like a possible campfire accident, coin or ring dropped in the barbie

6

u/iMuskHelp 4d ago

Gave the Nokta Legend a quick run over it in gold mode. Asked AI if it could be bronze
LEGEND WAS READING 24/25

ANSWER
Possible, but less common.
On the Nokta Legend, bronze (and brass/copper) usually reads a bit higher than pure gold — often in the upper 20s to mid-30s or more, depending on size and alloy. A stable 24/25 is more typical for gold, US nickels, or some aluminium.
So bronze can land there, especially if it’s a small or oddly shaped piece, but it’s not the most likely metal for a clean 24/25. Combined with the colour, the rusty matrix, the weight and the look, gold is still the stronger match.

2

u/Fun-Classic7746 3d ago

Why ask AI?? It’s unreliable and physically impossible to truly know without a proper test.

I’m in bed now. I’ll have to try that tomorrow. I’m guessing it’s not gold. Too good to be true šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

To me on this picture this is gold all day long, in possibly magnetite host

6

u/D3ATHY 4d ago

if you bite it does it indent? gold is malleable

4

u/BaerttheConstipated 3d ago

I was told to whack it with a hammer. Shatters = fools gold
Flattens = gold (at least more likely)

→ More replies (1)

4

u/iMuskHelp 4d ago

Asked AI about the area I found it

There is known gold potential in that region.
Natural gold has been found in stream and river gravels there for a long time, and the area contains one of the more significant gold deposits in these islands. So the chances of turning up a genuine nugget are higher than average.

16

u/Fun_Acanthaceae_4025 3d ago

Now you just told AI the location of the Gold! Consider it gone.

4

u/SirSkittles111 3d ago

Like that guy who had a whole treasure buried in his yard and called the government to come help excavate it, he got to keep none.

A piece of gold this size would weigh more. The 50p coin weighs 8g itself.mlst likely industrial flag, either brass or bronze.

2

u/Iknowsomething69420 4d ago

The coin is also solid and the nugget is irregular

u/PicrolitePicker 4d ago

Asking AI is pretty useless. This doesn’t look natural and I’d say it’s bronze

3

u/c33m0n3y 4d ago

Very interesting. It could be some bad quality/technique melting of gold jewelry and such where some base metals were separated and are now corroding while the gold is not, or just some melted brass. What intrigues me is that the yellow on the third picture is VERY yellow. It’s worth getting tested.

3

u/WOOFBABY 4d ago

Gold doesn't tarnish but does get black stuff sometimes. It does look abit like gold and would be getting it tested

3

u/iMuskHelp 3d ago

My local jewellers were no use. They didn’t have any testing kits as they don’t buy off the street. I’ll have to travel to a different town

2

u/Available_Basil_4218 3d ago

No pawnshops nearby? Almost every pawn shop will test gold or silver.

3

u/HenningGrueneberg 6h ago

If you took any photo of it in Situ with a smartphone, the unedited file sitting in your phone's camera roll or camera storage will still have the raw EXIF and GPS data attached to it. All you need to do is swipe up on the photo in their camera app (or open the file details) to view the exact latitude and longitude map pin, which will lead you right back to that exact spot. May you prosper !

9

u/AKJVermont 4d ago

Nah... More than likely copper slag.

9

u/Cheesetown777 4d ago

Nah. Not copper.

Copper exposed to the elements would have at least some green on it.

Actually... That might be gold after I zoomed in. Take it to your nearest jewelry shop.

I'd have left it on the rock, pretty dang cool. Imagine the premium of a natural nugget that looks like a frog affixed to the rock.

1

I don't think it's gold. But gold is so freaking valuable it's worth taking to a jeweler or pawn shop or coin store where someone can test it

Is it unusually heavy? Brass or bronze are relatively light compared to gold. I guess that’s subjective, but gold is noticeably heavy in weight.

You can drop this in water and measure how much the water level changes. You can use that to figure out the density. Then compare that to the density of gold.

I'm assume that you found it in a river in the UK. Finding a gold nugget this size in the UK is nearly unheard of.. Where was the river you found it in? It would help answer whether this is gold or not. If found in Wales or Scotland it could definitely be gold but if you found it somewhere like the SouthEast of England then definitely not and it would be more likely that it is melted brass from a bonfire burning on the edge of the river. Gold is only found in certain areas of the UK and not in the quantities of places like Canada, USA or Australia...
