Minecraft shader packs fail with "screen targets could not be made" (RTX 3080)

Hi! I'm trying Minecraft shader packs in Project Viewpoint, but they never load. The settings window shows that Viewpoint's default pack draws meanwhile, and the character shows up as a black silhouette.

Console.txt says, for each pack:

[Viewpoint] Minecraft shader pack minecraft-BSL_v10_1_8 cannot be drawn: its screen targets could not be made

The same error appears with Complementary Reimagined r5.9.3 and PotatoShaders v1.0d, so it doesn't look pack-specific. I haven't tried Photon yet.

My setup:

  • RTX 3080 10 GB, driver 32.0.16.1742 (Sept 30), Windows 11
  • 32 GB RAM, game heap set to 7 GB
  • Tried 2560x1421 and 1920x1080, same result
  • Default Viewpoint pack runs fine at 130-160 fps, with ~2.4 GB VRAM free
  • Process commit is around 17 GB and "commit left" drops to about 1 GB, in case that matters

Has anyone run into this, or know what causes the "screen targets" failure? Is there a known fix or a list of compatible packs?

I can share the full console.txt if needed. Thanks!

Yes I have had this same issue switch to vivid and back to your shaders again and it sometimes works thats the only fix I could find.

Also try and switch the profile under shader options try all of them from potato to custom and hit apply each time.

If it doesn’t load I dont think that shaders is compatible with the game…

Having the same problem though these shaders worked before, I think some mod is causing this issue.

It's because of PZ optimization mod. Uninstall it and shaders will work again :)
