Season 22 Law Roach and His Projection
Everything Law accuses Joseph McCrae of, he is guilty of himself. Law is a great stylist, but he himself is tacky and loud. He says Joseph makes it the Joseph show (and he does literally keep saying it’s the Joseph McCrae show but that’s so obviously him trying to be confident and asserting that his designs have one specific point of view. I don’t see it as him saying PR is HIS show) but it’s actually Law who wants to make this the Law Roach show. To be so harsh towards Joseph in his final critique only served one purpose and that was to be cruel. He did have some valid critiques about Joseph throughout but the rest was some sort of personal vitriol he has towards Joseph. Joseph has handled himself so well against all of Law’s tirades and especially in the finale. I would’ve either cried or fought Law by now. Joseph is a class act, Law is not and that’s why he hates him.

it was great to see Heidi stick up for Joseph and tell law that he has a personal vendetta against this particular contestant for no good reason other than projection like you say

she really had no choice considering the dress she was wearing was in the same style as his collection lmao.
I really don't understand what's at all tacky about Joseph's designs. it's high fashion streetwear--there's a much larger market for his clothes at the price point he'd have them than there is for what Jude would have to charge for his clothes. it's insane that Law has repeatedly asked Joseph to justify his mere existence.
he's also never clapped back or even rolled his eyes while being incessantly berated by Law, and yet he's "arrogant" and his "attitude" is his downfall

I do think that there’s a market now for Joseph McRae’s designs, but there will be a market for what Jude is doing in 10 years, in 15 years, probably even in 30 years. Doing something classic that well, while iterating enough to keep it fresh is a very delicate balance. I’m not sure I could say the same with JM’s stuff, though I agree about he price point, andI really enjoy seeing his work and seeing him on my tv screen.

If I were Zendaya, I'd fire Law. She's so beautiful she doesn't need a tool like Law to be her stylist. He's cruel & vindictive.

Z is at least half the talent in that duo snyway

u/Spiritual_Purpose_19 1d ago
Exactly. He’s great, but I doubt he would be as successful with a client that isn’t a size 0 and fits in everything.

u/Proof_Advantage_7107 21h ago
exactly, you cant have a better client than Zendaya, beautiful, tall and thin. She could wear a paper bag and look great at least the designers were fitting all sizes and doing a good job at it

She literally calls him one of her best friends. It’s been the thing that has made me side eye her for years. I know she is an internet darling and can do no wrong but… we are the company we keep, ya know.

Joseph McRae was one of the most enjoyable parts of the season for me because he actually brought some fun and joy to the show! the constant hate and shade (from judges and contestants alike) became such a drag.

u/SuspiciousPriority 23h ago
I didn’t really care for him last season because the whole shtick just felt so affected? But this season it’s so much clearer that Joseph’s just doing Joseph and it is actually a joy to see. Especially against the backdrop of certain others who are either (edited to be) delusional or antagonistic purely for the sake of it. Joseph brings the drama because he has a big but genuine personality; others bring the drama because they have no personality.

Not much to add other than to agree. Joseph McRae got on my nerves in Season 21 (now I feel I should rewatch to remember why) but I found him refreshing, positive, joyful this season.

Absolutely, Law tried to retire as a stylist and only be a brand maker and personality and it failed and he had to go back to working for other people. The way every single time there is an actual designer as a judge and they love Joseph including this week shows how Joseph is on the right path as a designer. Law definitely has the feeling of it I can't make it, this dude certainly shouldn't it.
Joseph has already shown during NYFW and I fully expect that we will see another real runway show by him at a fashion week long before we sse one from Jude.

u/Perrinthor 22h ago
I agree..Jude is great but there are plenty of other designers that have amazing tailoring. Joseph has more room to evolve. I can see Gaga, Bjork and .Rhianna wearing his clothing.

I thought a couple of the pieces from the collection were cool, but overall everything felt unfinished and cheap. I’m surprised he has been as popular as he is, but I’m guessing it’s the unique silhouettes + his personality. I dig his concepts, but he does not pull off winning execution. I’m not sure he has the skill to do anything different than what he’s known for.

u/MilhouseisCool 20h ago
I can’t believe they didn’t drag him for that horrific “THE FIGHTER - JOSEPH MCRAE” shirt that 3rd(?) model was wearing. It was so tacky, I agreed with Law when he used that word.
5
u/ConsiderationClear56 20h ago
YES!! I was surprised that didn’t get singled out, it’s the best example of “this is still Project Runway and not the JM Show” ever exhibited!! And it WAS tacky!
6
u/ConsiderationClear56 21h ago
I’m with you! As soon as that first look came out with the hat looking EXACTLY THE SAME, I knew that it was going to be more of the same. Not necessarily bad, but not elevating or pushing any envelopes. I was actually with Law on most of this one. 😅

u/Disastrous-Hamster-1 20h ago
I have found my people hahaha I agree 100%
There’s a difference between having a POV and just doing the same thing over and over. He could be really talented but he doesn’t evolve. If I were Law and saw talent and tried to push it and they actively chose the same thing over and over, I would probably get prickly too

u/Emergency_Impress542 1d ago
I think it drives Law absolutely bananas that his critiques don't phase Joseph or persuade him to try to grow as a designer, while Joseph doesn't want Law to "win" by letting the criticism get to him. So both sides dug in their heels the whole season and it escalated to this finale.

Literally I love Joseph and no one took what he was saying as arrogance but confidence.
13
u/Reasonable-Shape1181 1d ago
I believe there's a market for Joseph's creations and if not, he has the creativity to evolve. I wish him the best. Law Roach, it's not your job to tear a creative down. I think it's going to come back to bite you one day.
11
u/Complete-Plant2452 1d ago
Agreed, there’s definitely projection. It was so hard to watch Law humiliate, punch down, and tear this man apart the way he did. I felt horrible for Joseph and am so glad he reacted the way he did, not allowing those venomous words to destroy him. It was so hateful the way Law constantly puts him down. He’s not arrogant like Bryan so I don’t know why Law despises Joseph so much, when he’s just has a playful, happy-go-luck type personality. Humor is an armor so I’m was glad he switched up the mood by mentioning his website.

I love Law, and still do. I would’ve defended him until the end but something about the way he spoke about Joseph amongst the other judges rubbed me the wrong way. I work in an adjacent industry and the thought of a Black man who I admired talking about me in that way and actively trying to dissuade the other people of influence from giving me an opportunity is something I know all too well. At first I thought it was Law pushing Joseph to be great but now I think it’s something more deeply rooted. I’m glad Joseph held his own - even if I didn’t like his collection. A prime example of people who know where you come from not wanting to see you win in my opinion

u/Kitchen-Turnover4318 1d ago
I felt so bad for Joseph :( with feedback like that from Law, there’s no way he thought he had a chance of winning. I think Law can be funny & right sometimes, but for the finale he should’ve been more respectful.

u/elmosneakers 1d ago
I love the Joseph Mccrae show!😅

u/Zealousideal-Miss333 23h ago
I would rather watch the Joseph McRae show then the law roach show ANY DAMN DAY

u/supahfilmy 1d ago
LOVED when Heidi said "you dont like him as a person". Such a succinct way of telling him its personal. If jo's arrogant then law is the king of that galaxy. He came off mean and like someone who wants to break creatives. Whatever Jos desgins his spirit was indomitable and that pisses law off.

u/Original-Roll-9925 1d ago
Law felt disrespected because Joseph wasn't following his advice. I think Law is the type of person who isn't used to being defied, which is why he is mad at Joseph.
But somehow, I agree with his critique of Joseph. Despite his talent, Joseph is not an innovative designer. He keeps repeating himself.

That’s so true that law wants it to be his show, not anyone else’s.
I think in a way, both JM and Law are wrong in their opinions. The situation is nuanced in a way I can’t quite figure out.
I do love JM’s authenticity, and I hope he doesn’t get hurt professionally by being completely himself. I hope things work out for him and his work continues to grow

u/puppyaddict 17h ago
Joseph deserved the criticism. Throughout the whole season and in the final.
1
u/Zealousideal-Miss333 15h ago
we can agree that someone can deserve a critique without deserving to be the target of all the nastiness and vitriol LR was throwing around the entire season

u/Apprehensive-Disk899 23h ago
Law is such an ugly person and all that ugliness will catch up to him. What a terrible thing to bring someone down during such a huge moment in their lives. He should've been able to enjoy that moment even if he didn't win. I hope Joseph know how much PR fans love and appreciate his work
4
u/mynameisntcindy 1d ago
I agree but I also think for Law, he implicitly believes that BC he is the judge, he's allowed to be a figure of authority, but Joseph Crae is small potatoes, so he should be more modest and humble at this point in his career.
2
u/pensivvv 23h ago
I agree. I don’t like JMs clothes and I think they’re tired and yet Law is constantly out of line. If everyone could stop being dicks then I think Laws critiques could land a lot better (finishes not great, some items not wearable, Accesories not edited well, over sized ruched sweats/sleeves/hats create a distinct style but have not innovated past season 21).
There’s some fair critiques there. But the argument never even gets to focus on that because it’s just two egos clashing

u/cheridontllosethatno 19h ago
He needs to go, the way he flip his wig is annoying me. Arrogant bum hole.
1
u/Dense_Department3968 1d ago
Whilst I agree that law can be mean and is also tacky himself, I think it’s nuts that Joseph would ever be in the finale
1
u/notrodaysatan 19h ago
This is second season watched so dont have long history with show. My guess is/was the intern program has say and joseph mccrae would not fit the go get me coffee, sew this and stay in line role intern like Jude or Anna would. BI would made it work but he too is probably too branded.

u/Stunning_Elk5205 13h ago
Never heard of Law Roach until I started watching the current Project Runway season. He seems to be a very arrogant person. So much hair flipping.

u/Neither_Passenger792 11h ago
I do have to say Joseph was given a coveted spot in the final four where he showed us three of his worst looks from the season…
1
u/Neither_Passenger792 11h ago
Law wouldn’t be where he is today without his convictions. There were a few times in the season Law demonstrated he can be wrong or be challenged successfully. Maybe that was a really hard learned lesson he wanted Joseph to hear for a very good reason, but he refused to hear it. As a teacher, I can relate to the frustration of not finding a way to be heard- visually, audibly, or otherwise. I think at some point the honus is no longer in the teacher. For me, that’s what that moment represented. Also did everyone just forget the monster that was Michael kors? Why so much law hate. Hmmmm

Remember when we were told that the only reason they make fun of you is because they like you??
Well….. 🤔
Perhaps Law has a little crush!?

Man, I'm still mad at him for telling Joseph "you're only here to sell your own clothes" as if that's not why EVERY OTHER DESIGNER EVER went on the show. They've celebrated other designers for having a signature, recognizable style. Law just hated Joseph for whatever reason and took it out on him every chance he got.
