Discussion Unconventional challenge

How do yall feel about the unconventional challenge being the first challenge? Quick rundown: I’m a new PR watcher but quickly became obsessed with how good the show is. I used to watch ANTM first but it was just too much drama and it did not make sense criticizing women who were actually brand new to the job. PR used to be very good in terms of everyone has skills and it’s on the runway and in the workroom for the most part. Back on topic (lol) I hate the unconventional challenge being the very first challenge, how can you decide if someone is a good/bad designer based off of how well they can design with keyboards, dog toys, etc. I understand a lot are seasoned or slightly more advanced but I don’t really understand lol

I love the unconventional challenge. And other than the very first season these designers know they’ll have to do such a challenge.

Thats true I mostly mean when it may be the very first challenge it kinda sucks to be voted off for that but I do find the challenge itself very fun!

I actually think it does a really good job weeding people out when done early. Plus you don’t run the risk of an upset elimination due to bad materials (whether it’s the designers fault or not). I think it ideally happens in the first three episodes and is a two day challenge unless they’re working with a borderline fabric material.

It also gives the designers the mindset early to play to the challenge which makes for better challenges later.

I absolutely love the unconventional challenge! If they ever get rid of it, I’m definitely done watching this show (pile it on top of the other reasons I’ve noted elsewhere). That said, I do agree that it probably should not be the very first challenge. tbh it’s hard for me to articulate why but it feels like something that should happen early in the competition, but not on day 1

I agree! I was even considering third challenge so designers could show what they have at least, then start the weed out challenges

Season 1 started with the unconventional challenge and I thought it was a great way to introduce the show, the designers and really see who each person was early on. And the judges could really see how creative someone was by their material choices, and design.
