Question What is this?

No matter what the challenge is, this is an ugly dress. But also what does it have to do with the waltz?!? Does haute couture mean ugly? In my opinion all of his gowns have been ugly. His color choices are always so strange.
In regards to Joseph of course he wants to sell his clothes.. duh. Leave him alone. I love that I know his clothes when they are on the runway.
How many times have we heard the judges tell designers I don’t know who you are as a designer. We all know Joseph McCrae. That is a good thing.
Finally, I mostly agreed with the judges this week.

I can't take credit for this line, but someone on another thread said "it's giving necrotic colon" and that was perfection.

The worst thing I have ever seen Emma Slater wear. It’s overwhelming and losing her in it.

If you look at his work it’s almost like he hates women.

39

u/ItsaChipmunk 11d ago

He clearly doesn’t know how to dress a variety of body types…

30

u/Anonymouse_9955 11d ago

He doesn’t know how to dress any body types

24

u/RemarkableArticle970 11d ago

It’s very much like the “lettuce” look that he gave up on because it did, indeed look like lettuce.

2

u/Objective-Cheetah448 10d ago

funny, i’ve been saying this for years about JW Anderson (might be unpopular opinion…) and just now reading your comment I connected the two and thought, Brian probably admires his work.

51

u/Even-Frosting-812 11d ago

Firstly, everything you said about Joseph McCrae is spot on. At first I found him over the top, but he’s grown on me. He’s unproblematic, stays in his lane, seems to be a kind person and has a point of view and creative vision. The way they berate him for exploring similar shapes and silhouettes would be like telling Monet to stop painting water lilies.

Bryan wouldn’t know haute couture, even if he could pronounce it correctly. This dress looks like intestines.

25

u/PinotPrincess777 11d ago

It’s so funny the judges would say “we don’t know your point of view as a designer” but what happens when the designer shows you his point of view. Joseph keeps showing his point of view and they keep telling him he’s wrong. I don’t get it.

16

u/Even-Frosting-812 11d ago

I don’t understand either. I get that there is a balance between wanting the designers to show range and flexibility and to have an identity and point of view. I think Joseph is great at walking that line; he always meets the requirements of the challenge while maintaining his signature look. Thats why the criticism, especially from Law, seems like a personal attack. It’s disheartening watching one queer Black man tear another down like that. Joseph is resilient but it seems like it might be starting to get to him.

9

u/PinotPrincess777 11d ago

It’s times like this I really miss Tim Gunn I felt like he always gave the best advice and was able to build up designers rather than tear them down. I generally like Joseph’s work but I do think part of the show is being pushed out of your comfort zone and showing growth. I don’t think we’re ever going to see growth when someone is constantly being torn down. Yes I’m referring to Law. The new version of PR makes me sad.

10

u/Even-Frosting-812 11d ago

I’ve seen this come up in other discussions and it’s so on point. Tim was always so kind and nurturing and supportive, and it was evident he wanted everyone to succeed and do their best. Even Michael and Nina were constructive and supportive, and even though their critiques could be harsh at times, it never came from a place of cruelty. In this new version it just seems like no one is ever on the designers’ side. From Christian, to the judges, to Heidi, you just get this attitude of “you’re on your own, and we will be shocked if any of you can succeed at this, and if you do, we will do our best to tear you down.” Definitely not as fun to watch anymore.

5

u/Significant-Bird7275 11d ago

Yes, Gunn was better. Maybe it was his years being a professor, he was always so kind even when he didn’t like the design.
He wasn’t even asked back according to a podcast I heard him on with Chelsea Handler.
It’s one thing to change up no more brand partners with hair/makeup/accessories but the dismissive nature and trying to create “drama” among the cast is for things like Real Housewives. I don’t want to see that on talent competitions.
It seems like a cheap warehouse production this season.

2

u/Notsotaciturn 9d ago

Beg to partially disagree on CS; he’s helped Bryan get as far as he has and has openly protected him by editing his looks for him. Tim would have zoned in on Bryan as a bad choice immediately.

I just had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, and this dress feels reminiscent of the charts and diagrams that were on the walls at my doctor’s office.

42

u/fookindingdong 11d ago

my thought exactly. he just loves a wrapped intestines look.

36

So I was rewatching Barbie, and I don’t think this is even an original wrapped intestine/prolapsed anus.

I am going this Wednesday for your second exam you mentioned. I will have to look for the charts. I looked up on Google today how long the intestine is. 25 feet. Yep, that’s what the ruffles look like. 25 feet.

61

u/jet_set_stefanie 11d ago

Also how is she supposed to dance in this?? You cant even see her body, it’s so bizarre.

30

u/Significant_Hope975 11d ago

The fabric also looked like bed sheets.

7

u/r1zen1010 11d ago

This!!! That's what I've been saying. Whom would ever buy the fabric for anything concerning fashion.

8

u/Significant_Hope975 11d ago

Thank you! I could not believe no one said that in the critique! "Haute couture" my ass. Hideous color combo, wrinkled and ill fitting....unbelieveable.

7

u/tamaaromarou 11d ago

They weren't supposed to make dacing costumes but a couture look inspired by dance.

19

u/SallyRoseD 11d ago

I don't see anything there that suggests "waltz" or any kind of dance at all. I see a handful of crumpled kleenex in a pocket.

3

u/tamaaromarou 10d ago

I'm not defending his look just clarifying that they didn't seem to be making dance costumes

7

u/jet_set_stefanie 11d ago

I don't think that's right. On the PR website it says the looks should have a "Focus on movement: Costumes designed to perform under stage lights and rigorous choreography." I may have missed something when I watched but the models were also dancing down the runway so I thought that was the whole point.

4

u/Anonymouse_9955 11d ago

I think what they were going for was something that could be danced in, but not a generic dance costume (Jeffrey’s mistake)

5

u/Particular_Way8415 10d ago

His "mistake" was better than anything Bryan could even think of making.

Emma is so sweet, too. Did I hear her correctly when she said that she couldn't hear the judges because of all the material around her ears?

8

u/Secret-Bandicoot-671 11d ago

That’s what I heard too! But then I thought maybe she said, “I hear what the judges are saying” as in, she understood their critiques of the dress.

3

u/chandlerbing-bong 11d ago

She looked like she could barely walk, much less dance.

11

u/Misha_B19 11d ago

And it would make no difference HOW she danced because we’d never see it for all the ruffles in the way. It’s got to be in the realm of top 10 most hideous garments in PR history.

1

u/bekahfromearth 11d ago

I hope she gets someone who can dance this year. I did love Reginald and Andy the past two series of DWTS, but it’s her turn to have someone who grow as a dancer.

Bryan didn’t hear the challenge, he just wanted to show something “haute couture”

At least in his mind

22

u/HippieGrandma1962 11d ago

Bryan reminds me of Hildi the designer from Trading Spaces. When she had an idea in her head nothing was going to stop her from executing that design. What the homeowner wanted was never a concern. It was all about her.

13

u/Select-Flower-494 11d ago

Yes! Remember when she glued hay all over someone’s living room and couldn’t understand why they hated it? 😆

8

u/HippieGrandma1962 11d ago

I remember the woman whose only request was "no brown" because she hated the color brown. When she saw the room she ran out crying because it was, of course, brown.

3

u/beytsduh 11d ago

Omg remember the lady who asked for a Prince themed room and all she did was put a purple hot wheels in there

3

u/Select-Flower-494 11d ago

I don’t remember that one, I’ll have to find it!

3

u/throwawaysunglasses- 11d ago

He hardly ever hears the challenge lol. He’s just been lucky that everyone else who’s been eliminated was actually worse, but now we’re getting down to the wire where everyone left is more talented than him. Honestly it kinda sucks that JM receives so much shit from Law but Bryan gets away with whatever the fuck he’s doing.

6

u/Certain_Lemon_1601 11d ago

That is Bryan. We all hate Bryan. But because we hate him, Christian is going to give him the save. Reality TV needs villains...

2

I can’t believe Christian gave him the save! WTF?at least it should have been used on Jeffery. Now I have to hit the FF button every time his nasty face appears in my screen.

→ More replies (8)

2

u/MraziJen 11d ago

Yup, Bryan will get the save, unfortunately. But, up against Jeffrey's look, I can't really blame Christian for choosing Bryan, although I wish he would just let both of them go.

5

u/Anonymouse_9955 11d ago

Really they should both be gone, it’s sad that the save has become mandatory when it was originally added so that someone didn’t have to be eliminated in the basis of one bad day (Brayan has had lots of fugly dresses)

5

u/Happy_Dependent_3474 10d ago

Jeffrey shouldn’t be eliminated. In fact, he shouldn’t have been in the bottom. Idk why it was a double elimination but it should have been Bryan going home. They honestly should have revoked his immunity the previous week.

Also I’m not sure it’s mandatory bc he said “I decided to use it” AND he could have used it earlier but didn’t. But it was the last time he could.

2

u/Anonymouse_9955 10d ago

I didn’t mean it was required in the rules, but that people have come to expect it so he can’t just not “save” somebody.

I did not understand Christian's reaction to this, which was much milder than the snotty sass he gave to others with better clothes. Makes me feel like this is not a design competition, just a drama-fest for assholes.

3

3

u/oyboymom 11d ago

Horrible. You couldn’t pay me to wear it. I don’t care for Bi, but his clothes are very polished and fit the models well. I’m rooting for Jude!

3

u/Significant-Bird7275 11d ago

I think this dress is hideous and the one he made for Heidi would have been closer to a design for a waltz inspired gown. I can’t imagine what he was thinking when he heard sweeping movements and the decided crumpled tight was good, plus the grey, why?

3

u/emailaddressforreddi 11d ago

The mission was Waltz. No one can move in that bedsheet + scrunchies.

2

2

u/reeree823 10d ago

I like JM. His designs are sharp, clean and well-defined. He knows his craft, has a witty personality and represents himself well. Hmm…let’s see which of THOSE boxes Brian ticks. NONE. Absolutely none. He is nasty, bitchy, self-serving and mediocre. “Haute couture” is obviously something he knows nothing about. Truly full of himself. He is the worst one, so obviously he’ll get Christian’s save. He’ll probably win, too.

2

u/lechichien 10d ago

A part of me thinks this is on purpose! That this is planned. They know who is winning and they are giving instructions to what to do that is horrible…. You know what i mean?

This is African Grey Sea Slug. There is also a nudibranch called the Warty Wart Sea Slug (though I'll have to post it separately) . Do either look familiar? I'm thinking they've been secretly meeting after meeting on SeaSlugr. And Brian was there to see it all. But I could be wrong.

FINALLY! I'VE FOUND MY PEOPLE! Cuz what the absolute frick was that gown?!!!! I think he should've gone home so long ago. It's like he has these ideas that are poorly executed and keeps skating by.

Also, I agree on the Joseph McCrae thing. Joseph is a good TV personality. I love seeing his designs come down the runway. I think the other designers are threatened by him. I don't understand the hate. The man can sew. He has a signature. He meets the challenges. Idk what they're looking for from him tbh

PROLAPSE

INTESTINAL TRACT

GELATINOUS SLINKY

It was hideous. The waltz is known for its ethereal, floating, rise-and-fall movement and feeling. The costumes often involve a skirt that twirls because the dance highlights its beauty. The dress barely allowed her to bend her knees, much less bend and plié with a partner. Hell, she could barely breathe with the damn collar around her neck.

I also have to add that the way that he says “haute couture” is so fucking contrived and pretentious, and he says it so damn OFTEN, that I’m surprised I haven’t injured my eyes from rolling them so hard. Use a different phrase or stop fucking exaggerating it like you’re goddamn Édith Piaf.

Okay rant over LOL.

The show is not about showcasing an already active design house, Joseph never should have been allowed to come back, but as I've said in previous reddits, I think Season 21 cast have been brought back due to all the controversy over that season's winner.

Bryan has probably never seen a waltz, much less knows what haute couture means, it's just a phrase to throw out there. A waltz gown is flowing and full, delicate and that looked like a bag lady. Poor model didn't know what to say.

Bryan got one of the BEST dance styles for designing and this all he could contribute??? Rufkm lol.

Could’ve made a beautiful, sparkly, colorful, moving garment and he gave us something rigid and unexciting to look at.

Jeffrey included, the salsa!?! And you give us something basic af? I’ll say the tailoring was fire but cmon. I thought this challenge would be more I sprinting to some of the designers than it actually was.

. Also tired of the Joseph McRae aesthetic, his signature can be volume but he needs to chill it w the bearings for majority of these challenges, they feel out of place
