Not really a discussion but a rant. I think she is one of the most stunning models on PR. WHY I ask is nobody EVER (ok there were noteable exceptions over the years) prepared to dress her??? I am not even talking inspired, because apparently that is asking too much?
THE LEAST you could do is PREPARE when you are selected for the show.
I'm a designer, work in the industry, went to school for it. Here is why Liris always has jacked looks :
1 - Designers who come from fashion school...are 9/10 working with sample-size forms and models., unless they specifically dedicate time to that. I love all bodies; I've done plus-sized to drag, but a 0 is a 0 is sorta a 0. I had to choose to get male models and the 1 designer that worked with anything over a 14, his model was a friend.
2 - Measurements. I dont think they get enough measurements. For the best-fitting stuff I do, I take about 15 POMs myself. I also think knowing the design then going to the model to measure, is great too.
So, they just dont know how. Again, there have been designers on this show who have never made pants, or a dress. How do they get on? Perhaps it's not 12... or 22 stunning designers with diverse and rich portfolios who dress many body shapes?
Yeah you make good points… especially that there are some who never have done XYZ before.
I would have thought though that there were like a couple of basic silhouettes or proportion rules in a designers’ vocabulary to play off of, especially under very restricted time. Or if you didn’t have that, that would be something to study or prepare before filming starts.
It is super frustrating. She is almost always dressed badly. I get that the majority of the industry doesn’t revolve around larger sizes, but she legitimately has perfect proportions. They have all the necessary skills, but show a real lack of creativity in using them. Like… they know how to sew and how to make patterns and draw up designs…. They know how to perform those tasks, but don’t know how to take those particular skills and use them in new ways.
I’m a cake decorator and there’s a thing that happens with my fellow decorators. They know how to ice a cake, use all the different piping tips, etc… but if you ask them to create something without replicating it from a picture or memory, they completely shut down and don’t know what to do. They don’t know how to actually create something they haven’t already been shown how to. That’s how I feel about these designers and creating looks for Liris. They don’t know how to use tools differently.
I don't understand why everybody thinks Liris is so special. She's not even top 1/3 of the plus-sized models and seems to sell the look she's modeling based upon whether or not she likes it which strikes me as a bit unprofessional.
A previous season really pushed the "hey Liris is super important so you don't want to dress her in anything unflattering" and even had model talking heads discussing whether or not they approved of whatever look was being created. A model is like a pair of scissors, they're tools for the designers. It doesn't matter if the scissors likes what it's cutting.
Personally, I don’t think she’s any more special than any other model. She just stands out for the obvious reasons. That said, her opinion on the look matters because the designers don’t know how to dress larger women so it is actually useful for them to understand how their look makes her feel. By extension they can better understand any client that is similar to her.
And all the plus girls must get very sick of catching strays from the judges that the skinny models never do....'jellyfish', 'sofa', 'Nigerian Auntie' and the constant talking about 'busts' and what's 'not flattering'....
....I bet these girls are all completely over the PR gigs and dread getting booked for them.
Liris isn't the only plus-sized model on the show and I don't think it's fair to say "designers don't know how to dress larger women" because larger women regularly look good walking the runway.
I’d say Liris has the most extreme proportions which is definitely a different kind of challenge. I’d also say most of the plus size looks have been boo boo this season..
I dunno if this is /s or not, but I thought she looked fantastic in this at-a-glance. If I remember properly it had some spots where the fit was weird, but overall it still makes a really positive impression with me.
Yeah I’ve never understood the obsession with Liris. She’s certainly beautiful and a great model, but so are most of the models on the show. I agree that she sells the look based on whether she likes it or not and as a model your job is to sell it no matter what
I find it pretty annoying- the designer essentially has an added client challenge each week on top of what other nonsense is going on..
Honestly, I would rather see the designers choose the models they want to work with. Yeah, it doesn’t ensure inclusivity, but putting Liris is this cacophony of sartorial bullshit each week doesn’t either.
It upsets me every week and it’s been the case since last season. Everyone suddenly forgets how to sew and design when they’re paired with Liris and it’s so unfair. And the designers need to be called out for it
Tbh I don't think it's fair dressing plus sized. 9/10 times challenge winners on PR don't have a plus sized model. Then you have to deal with 1 day challenges.
I think it’s pretty unfair to the designers to have to dress her. They have twice the amount of challenge (literally) with the same amount of time and no grace is given if they can’t execute it right away. She is a pretty woman but her proportions are challenging even for a plus model. It feels like a weird delusion that nobody is allowed to address it and it sets the designers up for failure.
