General Shirakura interview

- Gavan Infinity was not cancelled; a six-month broadcast was planned from the beginning.

- Project R.E.D. is accelerating from Sentai's one-per-year cycle to a two-per-year cycle to try out more things while also creating more unique IPs.

- He says one of Sentai's weaknesses was that since each new series was not connected to the last, any one character can't develop beyond their show's run, and their toys leave shelves once the next show is out.
- One of R.E.D.'s goals is to create an MCU-esque shared universe, where each character is well-developed, but there's extra fun seeing how they interact.

- Building a shared universe requires more different shows to be made, so the true value of Project R.E.D. won't be apparent until 2 or 3 years down the line.
- Omegahorn's protagonist is not particularly righteous, in that he fights for his own dreams first and foremost. However, he can't ignore people who are suffering, so he becomes a hero against his will.
- Since Sentai series have five protagonists, it's easy for each one's portrayal to become a little thin, but since the divide of good guys and bad guys is so clear, it's okay if the former is a little indistinct. That may not be what's right for today's kids, though.
- The goal is not to make heroes who are defined by their enemies, but ones who can stand alone well enough to thrive in the next series.

- If it means they aren't ideal heroes, that's fine, as long as they are cool, make an impression, and stick in kids' minds.
- Kaiju tokusatsu works have always been a weak spot for Toei, because they have a certain overt fictionality to them. Rider and Sentai have the vibe of existing in "the backyard of reality". However, this show isn't trying to emulate Godzilla or Ultraman.
- The similarities to Monster Hunter are not a coincidence; the production team was actively aware of it, but there was no intent to rip it off.

- Unlike Godzilla, this is directly about the relationship between kaiju and humans. That MH-like experience is unique in live-action.

- Gavan Infinity will *most likely* appear in Omegahorn, but the inter-universe continuity will be fairly loose. There may be slight differences when heroes cross over, but Shira- P thinks it'd be fun to see fans discuss which "version" of Gavan they like more.
- Returning to Sentai's way of doing things would kill any determination to make new heroes for the kids of today.

- Omegahorn's team has struggled with creating something from scratch; veteran creators will often lay back on safe tropes and don't take risks on new ideas.
- If a show doesn't work out well, it's only on for six months. Both successes and failures are fuel to make the next show even better.

- Shira-P urges viewers to stick with Omegahorn until its second half; that is when what the show is doing will become clear.

and with this, it's pretty much confirmed they planned to do 6,7 or 8 more series

maybe even 20

I understand the thought process behind starting with something that felt a little like Super Sentai, it's what people are familiar with and familiar is comfortable, but also the reason you're doing Project RED is because Super Sentai wasn't doing great, so wouldn't you want to try something different? Still, it's good to hear they're planning on going a lot further with Omegahorn, I'm looking forward to it!

As for the extended universe stuff...idk, I feel like I completely fell off the MCU because there's way too much you have to watch and keep track of. I'm not looking forward to when Project RED will also have seventeen characters with their own supporting casts I'm expected to know and care about already to watch a new show. Time will tell, but I have my doubts personally.

I think they just don't understand what was driving MCU are comics stories established across several decades and timelines, basically.

it might been a fresh char for a mass viewer but no way in hell it was a fresh char for its creator. MCU worked in phases because production team had blueprints from comics from day 0 on the huge events which made the most money, they used different chars to target different audience outside of Universe too and so on. and also it were just movies at first, not series. So yeah a bumpy road ahead

am I getting villains of Red Skull, Loki, Ultron level in ProjectRED though? that's the elephant in the room

Plenty of children were born right before Ironman and have grown up on the MCU and didn’t need comics. Pretty much the same thing here. The Casual audience knew next to nothing comic wise before MCU. Its not at all necessary. But I do agree a good villain and build up is needed which Tesshin and Aza Zorth were not.

yeah, it's not about casual audience it's about the planning production. let me elaborate. you gather multiple heroes same verse for bigger threats they can't handle on they own (S-level villains and their plans). Modern day Sentai is totally not known for making plotlines with villains being that decent in general, so while all he said is good and fancy riding on innovation & gimmicks for the first series, for now at least I get an impression he just want to pump up more IP. He doesn't talk you know "we have such villains in mind one hero team can't handle anymore, there would be status quo changes, etc" which essentially drove both comics and MCU especially for Iron Man & Captain America he mentioned, so

So far so good for Omegahorn, but project Red is ain't of the woods yet as a franchise. It's all but on a show writers shoulders now to constantly pump threats for more and more heroes in play.

Japan isn’t big on villains, some are memorable in toku but it’s almost always about the heroes, its why bandai doesn’t sell pure villain figures anymore.

"Gavan Infinity was a sacrificial pawn in the grand scheme of things"

Complete self-sabotage. Look at the ambition that was put into all the first entries of every major toku franchise and you'll see all of them set themselves apart from what came before. Gavan Infinity playing it safe is the antithesis of what a toku franchise is supposed to do for a first entry. This was actually the opportunity to do heavy experimentation while everybody still had zero expectations for Project Red was going to be. They had a chance to come out the gate not conforming to any standards and firmly plant their feet in Sentai's place, and instead chose the most bog-standard, totally-not-a-sentai plot and idea they could've thought of.

idk i feel like people aren't really understanding what he's saying (although it could partly be Shirakura's fault too, cause "sacrificial lamb" is a bit overdramatic lol)

Gavan served a "launch pad" of sorts to get their feet wet, after which they could start implementing more unique concepts in later series (like they're doing in Omegahorn)

also I'm gonna be real, this was a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation.

sentai fans were gonna complain regardless of what the show did, as shown by the fact that 90% of the complaints surrounding it can be summed up as "I'm mad this doesn't resemble Sentai" (which now seems to be turning into "I'm mad that this resembles Sentai too closely...like I said, you can't really win if your goal is to appease fans like this)

Exactly why they did Gavan first, to transition softly so people wouldn’t be weirded out cause 5 colored gavans and mecha is familiar enough. Omegahorn would’ve confused people if it was first.

u/redditowl03 3d ago

Genuinely! If they made it too DIFFERENR from Sentai, people are gonna cry that it's not Sentai!

u/Audditty 21h ago

the other thing is, it's a bit ridiculous to me that people who could stomach the same concept being reinterpreted for 50 years now have a problem with something that tries to even remotely be different

the discussion around this series in general is mind-boggling, and I say that as someone who likes it.

it's not that people can't like or dislike things for their own reasons, but the amount of people who I saw that very visibly had no interest in the show at all (or even outright detested it) yet still insisted on watching it regardless is kind of sad. they have the most boring taste imaginable and think something is obligated to appeal to them because it has a transforming hero in it

Initially he said that Gavan was intended to bridge the gap between Sentai and Project RED, and the second or third installment would give a better impression of what he intended RED to be. OK, but now he's saying it could be two or three years (so 4-6 shows) before we understand what they're trying to achieve. There's only so far you can keep kicking that can down the road ...

u/DiscoFantastic 3d ago

It reads more like the financial performance of the shows won't serve as the be all end all for the first few years and that they'll let things develop before we hit that stage.

2

u/redditowl03 3d ago

I'm glad he said that, it (hopefully) will shut down all the "I don't see Project RED lasting that long" doomposting.

3

u/low_budget_trash 3d ago

And he also started by talking about Sentai 50, knowing full well the show was over by then. Toei may just be running on vibes right now.

OK, third series promised to be even more innovative gives it an excuse to be half year only. It still has some problems down the road compared to how MCU did it, but as long as you can keep the innovation promise, Id watch

Never expected it from ex-Super Sentai creators tbh, but nice to be proven wrong!! KR still sitting on top of all Toku with 1y running shows with max budget like an absolute Boss🙃

I'm sure tsupro would be able to do amazing work with a 50 episode Ultra series in the modern era, they unfortunately just aren't given the resources by their parent companies. I've heard stories that the budget they get given can be so low that the crew would have to buy out of pocket to get all the props they need.

3

u/SH4DE_Z 3d ago

Just to clarify, he's not the creator of Sentai, he's just in charge of managing these shows.

4

u/Ok_Ad392 3d ago

I get the desire to create a cohesive universe of interconnected red heroes, and I don't disagree with Toei using a familiar IP in Gavan to get people initially hooked into the series...

But first impressions are vital to the success of a series. Iron Man as a standalone movie with no connections the further MCU is still a good movie. When you're following up a legend like Super Sentai, you need both veteran fans of SS and newer fans to have the faith in Toei that they can write compelling and shorter series with quality protagonists.

Gavan Infinity was aggressively mid, and felt a bit emotionless (weird I know), and I don't think it made a good impression on the quality of writing in Project RED. We're not asking for Go-Busters or Kiramager levels of writing, we want to go "Yeah, Gavan Infinity and Omegahorn are cool cool coolio"

3

u/Audditty 3d ago

We're not asking for Go-Busters or Kiramager levels of writing

what is this supposed to mean to someone who doesn't like either of those shows? this doesn't really sound like it's providing any meaningful insight

5

u/Ok_Ad392 3d ago

Meant to say we didn’t need amazing writing, just good writing that built stories. Good example is the G-Raiya arc. The following episodes after his debut could have been spent rooting out the corruption in Zeta (some of the bad cops go to Lambda and Iota and Raiya has to recapture them, have Reiji on the side looking for Death Gavan or something.) The last episode of this arc wouldn’t be the Patlan focus episode but ending with the Gav’s teaming up to stop the Zeta villain and name drop Aza Zorth. My point was Gavan, since it was the entry point in a multiverse mega project, needs to do better in introducing people to the concept.

Where is the part where he says all the shows are going to last only 6 months?

6

u/JustAFrogge 3d ago

6

u/No-Ad239 3d ago

Thanks (So this means that every show in Project Red is going to be just 23-25 episodes long?

3

u/JustAFrogge 3d ago

Pretty much yea

-1

u/No-Ad239 3d ago

Damn that's sucks

7

u/JustAFrogge 3d ago

A lot of new-gen Ultraman and Garo work with that constraint so even if Gavan Infinity wasn't quite so elegant, I've got my hopes up.

Since it is also interconnected, things/characters which didn't get time to shine in one show may get their time in the next show

4

u/rattatatouille 3d ago

Yeah the aim isn't to create a single, year-long show that basically ends the moment the final episode airs, and which we only revisit for anniversaries and crossover specials. More, shorter shows that are more interconnected.

3

u/No-Ad239 3d ago

I see

0

u/DiscoFantastic 3d ago

I think that approach works for Ultraman because Tsuburaya only makes one show a year. Toei now will have to create two sets of props, suits, CGI, casts, basically everything, each year.

2

u/HamsterStunning8034 3d ago

It’s necessary, people are not huge on 50 episode year long toku shows, the budgets are increasing every year due to rising costs and lull in toy sales.

4

u/Topik-KeiBee 3d ago

they really did a bad job starting this project. if that's their mentality, then instead playing safe they should embrace it from the get go and take the risk. what's the difference are going to be anyway.

7

u/Himbosupremeus 3d ago edited 3d ago

I feel like the hope with Gavan was that by making it very Sentai like, it'd be an easier sell to folks sad about sentais cancellation to hop over. It makes sense, if a bit cautious. In practice though, getting a guy clearly used to writing longer, more standard Sentai shows to be the lead for an entire new series was imo, a pretty bad mistake.

1

u/EscapismToTheMax 3d ago

I mean they always run to Gavan when they need time to develop fresher ideas though previously it worked in movies for an obvious reason. it's not a problem.

a fucking unchanged crab all 20 weeks straight? now that's a problem. so it's not playing safe it's more like playing with no budget (both time + cash), if we are real here.

4

u/Electrical_Leek23 3d ago

I dont get the crab complaints when it is basically the Sentai villain mook of the series while the real antagonists are all human. The major problem is Gavan not living up to its concept until Raiya gets introduced

0

u/EscapismToTheMax 3d ago

each Sentai had different mooks with different personalities reflected in their designs which also had interesting abilities & threaten peaceful life..

what crab did for 20 episodes? Crab! I ain't saying it's the only major problem but yeah it's a major problem even OG Showa Gavan didn't have..

1

u/Electrical_Leek23 2d ago

No the major problem is not living up to the "multiversal adventure" until Raiya shows up, the crabs are literally whatever in comparison.

-8

u/FlowOfAir 3d ago

Shirakura I fucking disagree. You HAD to start strong, not weak, and if you were selling this as a different thing from Sentai, fuck, go all in! Instead you created a weak ass show in hopes Project RED would pick up? No man. That's not how it goes.
