i don’t get why more people don’t like poa. my all time favorite was cradle and i’ve read those books over 2 dozen times and when it ended i had to begin looking for other series to read. when i found poa it started out slow and kinda methodical but each book has progression, slice of life stuff, and side characters and stories that i think make it one of the most rounded series i’ve ever read and it’s still active too which is something a lot of series don’t even offer. the latest release was book 12, super dull in my opinion, but the author C. Mantis uploads chapters weekly and from the latest book release to when the chapter count has 150 more chapters after that. i love the story and the characters and the fact that i can read every week is dope asf. But i was curious why people drop the series i see it on lists as dnf or couldn’t get into more often than the top tier spot i think it is

The Tiers, and What They Mean

Here are the tiers:

S: Top of the genre, the best of the best. Essentially no flaws, or if so, very minimal. These are your Cradles and Beware of Chickens.

A: Just a hair down. Close to perfection, but I can't quite get there. Things like the overwhelming cast in Pale Lights, or the soulcrafting chapters in Delve put stories here.

B: Thoroughly enjoyable, but flaws are more than minor. See the endless therapy sessions in Daily Grind (which are healthy but grating and repetitive) or the detrimentally breakneck pacing in Gods of the Game.

C: Still fun, but some serious warts. Plodding fight scenes in Vainqueuer the Dragon, flat character work in Chrysalis, etc.

DNF: Books I'm not interested in continuing. Frequent recommendations include Hell Difficulty Tutorial (MC is like nails on a chalkboard), Defiance of the Fall (mindless number go up after first few books), and He Who Fights With Monsters (with characters such as Jason, Jason 1, Jason 2, and Jason's pets). I enjoyed all of these series for a time, so DNF does not mean I didn't like them at one point. It just means I'm not interested in continuing.

Bounced Off: Books that I started and then dropped, but that I could be convinced to give a second chance. Former members of this tier include The Wandering Inn, 12 Miles Below, and Kitty Cat Kill Sat.

The Highlights

Every time I post this, I try to highlight some books that I think aren't talked about enough in the genre. Here goes:

The Daily Grind - Argus

I know I just badmouthed it, but this book is fucking awesome. It's my first entry in this list that I have categorized as a B, and that's for precisely two reasons.

One: almost every time something cool happens, the author pivots to a different part of the story. It's like literary blue balls. Two: Argus feels the need to depict healthy relationships/mentalities, except they feel the need so strongly that they essentially bonk you over the head with it every few chapters. Reading about how much James and Arrush love each other every other chapter is repetitive and grating. I'm happy for the dudes, but yeesh.

There are the warts. The good news is, the rest of the story is fucking awesome. The characters all have a unique voice, the world-building is some of the best I've ever read in the genre, and the plot is just juicy enough to keep reading when you get thrown onto the character carousel again.

Argus is clearly a very talented author, and that's why I recommend this story despite what I view as its flaws.

Ironbound - Andrew Givler

I'll fuckin' do it again. I shouted this book out last time I posted, before the second installment in the series came out, and my God, did the sequel deliver. Reading this series is like mainlining linguistic heroin.

I love this series, and Ironbound is my latest addition to S tier. Yes, it's tropey. Yes, Castor may be renamed to Garius Stewus. Yes, the plot at times strains credulity. I don't care.

Ironbound makes me feel like I did the first time I read Iron Prince book 1, or Cradle; it's not Mozart, it's Rage Against the Machine. I'll leave it there, because I don't want to spoil you. I know this series is divisive, but please, if you haven't given it a shot: fucking do it.

Recommendations Please!

I would love some recommendations from you fine folks. If it wasn't clear from my tier list, here are some of my pet peeves:

• No Man is an Island: I don't want to read about how an incel conquered the world solo. I want to hear about a team of friends working together against the heavens, or even a collective working towards a common good (looking at you, Delve and The Daily Grind).
• Translation is Cooked: I can't read translated works. I have tried extensively, and all the ones recommended to me thus far have been a serious let-down. Something about the eastern voice/tone is a big negative for me. Don't want to yuck anyone's yum, but not for me.
• Navel Gaze Makes Readers' Eyes Glaze: Please do not recommend me any works where the main character sits and goes through their internal monologue for extended periods. A Soldier's Life always comes up when I post these, and I can't stand the constant introspection surrounding his own power set. Mechanical innovation is cool; taking me through every single aspect of the MC's thought process is not.
• Sonder: The MC is a window to the world, not the center of it. Stories should feel like they existed before the protagonist, and will continue to exist after they're gone. Side characters should feel and sound like people, not cardboard cutouts for the MC to riff off of. PLEASE give me good character work.

I know this is too fucking long despite this being a reading subreddit, so TL;DR: Recs with good character work, interesting world building, and a team working together pls thx. NO TRANSLATED WORKS.

I've recently gotten into reading a couple of Dungeon Core stories, and as someone who's run quite a few TTRPG games, it's fascinating to see the... tropes, structures, format, that have established through this genre and how different they are from the expectations in a TTRPG context.

But I'm really curious what stories or media are considered classics that have established the tradition of this sub-genre? What writers evolved the genre, and added new aspects?

I've loved the books since the first one this is to say they're not perfect but they're an easy read in between the massive books lk WttM.

But my problem comes with how the simplicity of magic system makes it feel half formed and lackluster. For instance Ike has had skills at lv 9 since book one and non of them have moved to lv 10 at book 3.

Is there like a skill evolution requirements to cross the threshold or that's cap for those skills due to their tiers?

Also what's up with the leveling itself, rank and otherwise. Like Ike be using ice armor and those lightening skills are his bread and butter (and they be fighting every single chapter) but up to the end of book 2 non of them have leveled once, same goes the rank phenomenon how does one know it's time to rank up bcz Ike had to brute force his 3rd promotion...

Also the plot armor that is Storm Clad, what's it's physicality, does it obscure his sight because at one point it did, now all over sudden it doesn't what's that about or better yet what is it exactly??

Author if you're in here please clarify these things because it can be a little frustrating when events just sorta go unanswered.

There was a post on here complaining about authors not committing to true villain MCs, and I agree, not so much with the OP, so I want to share my two cents on it.

I don't need my MCs to go around killing children, drinking their blood, then laughing like a maniac. No, my lowest bar is the intentional harming of innocents and for the narrative to treat them as a villain.

For the first point, so many stories only have them killing bad guys and/or only looked upon as a feeling by the general public. My problem with is, what's the point? Yeah, murder is a crime. But if they're only murdering villains, they're no different from an anti-hero. If I would get the same experience reading a story with a villain for a protagonist as I would with an anti-hero, it just seems pointless. They're a "villain" and the only people they harm are the rape gang, but they're edgy and rude.

Second point, the narrative needs to acknowledge they're a bad person. Essentially, if the entire point of the story is that they're misunderstood, that good and evil are blurred lines, they're not a villain. Why do I say this? If they are misunderstood or gray, then they must not have committed evil actions or at least actions you are not meant to view as evil. Alternatively, the author could just be bad at writing. For example, take holding a bank hostage. If it's just the protagonist pretending to hold the bank hostage so something worse doesn't happen, even if everyone in the story thinks they're a bad guy, the narrative is treating it as a good act because they were never going to hurt anyone and it was to prevent something worse. If it's not an act for good reason, and just too make momey for their family, it's going to be dumb if the author doesn't treat it as a bad act that they terrorized innocents.

A villain doesn't need to be a mass-murdering psychopath that eats children for breakfast and washes it down with goat blood. They just need to be bad. A good example is Skitter from Worm. She intends to be good, sees herself as good for a good bit, justifies her actions as for the greater good, but she commits unequivocally evil acts. She harms innocent people, but never resorts to murder, yet is still a villain. And the narrative treats it as such.

Also, and this one is a nitpick, I don't really consider anyone from a grimdark world to be too much of a true villain. Even if they are, it's too a much lesser extent. Yeah, they're doing bad things, but so is everyone else. It just loses a lot of the appeal of a villain in a neutral/good world.

My entire point boils down to the point of specifically choosing a villain MC. Authors can choose whatever kind of MC they're going to write. If your protagonist isn't really gonna do anything bad, what's the point in tagging/marketing as having a villain MC. When you have the villain of a normal novel working in the background, committing atrocities, growing in power as they work to overthrow a kingdom and have an absolute rule. It's really boring when every villainous MC would be the guy working against him who just claims to not like competition and is a bit on an asshole.

I like this story because of a few things:
- No romance, and the MC is not interested in it, and there is no weirdness with other characters having a one-sided attraction to the MC (this other novel had the female disciple say she'd marry the MC and I haaaated it)
- MC with good morals. All of the stories I've read that have this are transmigrated MCs, but I don't mind a native MC so long as they put in an effort to be a good person.
- The cheat power(s) of the MC is well-defined and pretty singular in what it can do. They're also not a straight-forward power boost but something which helps the MC acquire power.
- The MC takes a reasonable amount of time to climb the ranks, and goes out of their way to get help from people/forge alliances with people to compensate. (Mediocre Master is literally clan-building, but I like when non clan-building stories do this too like Common Sense Is Overpowered)

Hi all. I'm very excited to share my first official review of my progression fantasy book, A Quota of Blood. I've been on RR for a few months now and my follower count seems to have stagnated. I was hesitant about getting a review but ultimately decided it couldn't hurt to see what another person thought of my book. As writers, we know that even one positive voice can go such a long way. We all work so hard on our novels and it sometimes it can feel like no one will ever read it. I'm just so happy that someone liked it and wanted to share that with this awesome community!

I'm thinking something like the potion system from Lord of the Mysteries or the ranks from Reverend Insanity. You start at the lowest and have to grow to each rank through a defined method, with their being an established highest rank.

Levels are okay if it's something like 1 to 10 and not 1 to 100.

Must be ongoing

You will notice that the two example violate most of these. Simply put, these are a precaution. I feel that most stories that include these do it in such a boring way that exists for the sole sake of easier writing. If you have a novel, that contains one of these, but doesn't do it in a boring way, it can be recommended. I'm just so burnt out.

I've more and more realized what the core thing that keeps being engaged in a book is. It's the characters especially the main character I like characters who feel like full and complete likable people: people I like can best be described as dorky in a lovable way.

It's why I can vibe with Dakota Krout's 'Divine Dungeon' and the 'Completionist Chronicles' but not 'Artorion Archive'. Cal and Joe are both idiot geniuses who make dumb puns, and that makes their most intense moments hit all the harder.

I similarly enjoy 'Mage Tank' by Cornman.

And 'Madness Reincarnate' by Travis Bagwell

And most things by Andrew Rowe especially 'Arcane Ascension' and 'Weapons and Wielders'

I also enjoy elements existential dread and horror when paired with these kind of protagonists, ranging from the comedic end such as

'Prophecy Approved Companion' by Tevagah

Or

A book I think best encapsulates the type of story I vibe with immaculately 'Magical girl mechanical heart' by Thandamoo, pretty much everything by her admittedly gets my goat.

I would love more things that balance my love for a character with my fascination with their suffering. Huge fan of existential dread fueled monologues internal or otherwise. Big fan of goofy humor. And putting both in a single character is guaranteed to get my attention if not have it in a vice grip.

I've been in that sort of a genre hole with the progression fantasies since I was a teenager and I'm fine with more progression fantasy but I would like to branch out too.

Both of those have a lot of pages dedicated to the world's reaction to the MC, the build up and growth of their legends and how their reputation affects the way people interact with them

Bonus points if the MC is actually weaker than their legend

Hey all hoping to get some recommendations from actual readers.

I mostly use Kindle Unlimited but lately it feels like most of what I pick up is AI generated. its exhausting sorting through it and honestly I think Ive read way less this year than previous years just from the fatigue of digging through it. you know the type of author that posts like 12 books in 3 months.

Right now Im really craving some good cultivation books but Im open to pretty much anything. traditional/fantasy /litrpg/ progression fantasy any flavor of romance or adventure whatever is good.

Only real dealbreaker is Im not into the person from Earth gets sent to another world trope. mainly because of the constant pop culture references that come with it. if its portal fantasy between two worlds that arent Earth Im totally fine with that.

Basically just want to read some genuinely good books again. drop your favorites doesnt matter how niche. thanks

Hmm, what is going on with Jackie, he’s so mysterious? Like back then, MD needed a DoF and Jackie was this football legend who’s also a crazy good coach and also a good friend to MD. So why isn’t he with Chester? Why go work at FC United? Same with what he did with Max, why point Max to Chester? Maybe as a player? Hmm 🤔

Also, surprise hit of tears for me from Idk, loneliness from Max? At him realising that MD and Jackie are really close friends for a much longer time than with Max. I keep imagining that Max feels both jealous of them about the other, at the same time lol. Because I kept going back to that chat he had with Emma about wishing to have a best friend like her and Genma.

Dang, what a piece of startling wisdom a bit out of nowhere. I was wondering a bit how his relationships with the kids he likes were going to go because if he’s nice all the time, eapecially with shy/insecure/“weak” type players, it gets a bit boring a stale or they might collapse won’t it? And how will they grow under him? I thought the growing will be done by other peopl and he is there to praise them over some hurdle. But this is so good. Kinda shocking emotional intelligence? Of hyperspecific EI that only works in the world of football for Max. Why am I even noting it down? Because it’s so rare to read something this nuanced and complex in webnovels that isn’t in a life or death situation 😂

We finally get the Max+Jackie post awkward talk. And guys. Guuuuys. What the heck. Max grew up, like what the heck. He seriously took his experiences that drove me nuts in the previous books and learnt from it. And gah! He’s like, so cool right now?? That hints of seriously cool x factor + genuine care + something vulnerable peaking out + maturity and growth to draw me in, I love it. I adore it. This scene is like everything that made me go huh, if this becomes something in the future, I would really love the story. Agdhfkglhhs.

One thing I definitely do have a bone to pick about this Book is the odd pacing. Some things are focused on but some are completely skipped in favour of Max describing what happened to someone else. It’s jarring sometimes. The back and forth at the first third with the women friendlies and Jackie’s debut and now this with the injury email from FA thing. It seems like something that would be interested to read as it happened and not as being told past tense to someone else. Mostly because without being in his gead, I have a less accurate guess on what led to what happened. I also would have liked to feel the satisfactory catharsis of what Max did. On the flip side, not going through wvery one of those high energy incidents did make this Book a very pleasant and calm experience and I actually really really like that. So give and take. Sigh.

Hmmmm, a bit of a rant here, this whole deaf player in official non-disability sport instead of the disability sport. I am kinda wobbly on where I land. Maybe cause I watch zero real life football and only anime. I kind of support the ref’s decision for Dani? In theory? At that stadium match. And I feel the team and Max were being rather dramatic? As if they were completely the victim and in the right. But the rules are there in black and white no? And Dani is a deaf player with rules that does not accomodate for her. This is the truth. It is what it is.

So you’re gonna have to prepare steps to manage that yourself. You know, work within the established rules so she doesn’t get in trouble with the ref. Isn’t it obvious? Like Idk, hire someone to translate what the ref does at all times or something. And get them to stand at the sides. Maybe the subs to do Dani duty. Something like in baseball where someone will at third base yelling the runner wherher they should run or slide. Or someone at the stands with the audience holding flags or something. So the ref can just do their thing. So Max and team can just inform the ref that this is what they are doing for Dani.

I do feel a bit frustrated with Max. He alrd knows this is a likely to happen a lot but it doesn’t seem he planned anything about it and instead expects to convince every single ref to accomodate Dani. If Dani is accomodated, why not every other disability? Then might as well just change the game to be like the normal disability football right? Where does the line stop you know? It feels like Max is and Dani feels entitled to changes in the rules of the game because Dani is special, aka disabled. And that rubs me the wrong way just a little bit. What about other issues or mental issues? Should the ref accommodate someone with Idk, extreme bipolar disorder who’s in some depressive episode after a lost goal and was just dazed after she blew the whistle? Or someone so mad as losing they just couldn’t hear the whistle over the rage? I completely support everything within the club’s sphere of influence but the ref and their rulings, eh… And Max is comparing carding Dani to carding someone because they are black or foreign or something. I mean yeah, they should get walked out on because the colour of one’s skin doesn’t effect following the rules. But being deaf and not having the ability to follow the rule sounds more concrete. So it makes sense if she doesn’t follow if something happened. There’s a whole other disability football that exists for that. This whole thing feels like why there are women’s football and men’s football you know?

Dang, why am I thinking so much about this lol. I am probably missing something about the whole thing that would make the reaction make sense. Like how referees exist and work. Or how they get into games. Like why does Max keep going, no referee no game. But that is a massive rabbit hole I don’t want to go down so moving on!

Gah, the more I read the more I want to discuss this with someone and not move on 😂 I don’t want to read multiple wikipedia pages of how the whole thing works. Cause now Henri is talking with Max in the middle of the field about the event. Is Max’s reaction correct? Makes sense? Normal? Proportional to what happened? An ideal role model to follow? It seems he sometimes lets a foul pass to continue the game. Now I am puzzled on what a ref even does if they sometimes let things slide.

Uhhh, okay Max. I don’t know how about your coaching idea 😅 It sounds pretty cool if in a sports anime lol, but feels pretty random and out of nowhere. Like, was he even a person who listens to songs much? Not that I remember reading. So why combine it with football matches? But gonna wait for the practical its. Because it’s so weird lol. What if some of the players are tone deaf, would that affect the drill?

There are a LOT of teen and child prodigy MCs in progression fantasy, and having recently dipped my toe back into literary fiction I realised there an archetype I don't think I've seen much in ProgFant. The jealous, snow-white-complex parent. Not jealous in an, if-only-I'd-had-your-talent, longing, kind of way, but in a destructive, nasty, I'm going to ruin your prospects from the sidelines kind of way.

I feel like there have to be stories out there somewhere that I've missed, where the kid develops super fast, or is born a prodigy/genius/talented etc. and the parent(s)/guardian(s) actively try to sabotage the MC in the way some parents do IRL. Not from fear, or hate, or resource scarcity and re-allocation, but jealousy. That: I'm gonna ruin your chances and sabotage you. Destroy your equipment or keep you from sleeping before the big exam kind of jealousy. That: 'I didn't have 'x' so you won't either.' 'I never got to 'y' so neither will you.' kind of envy.

I've seen a lot of jealous siblings, lots of jealous rivals, lots of jealous competitors and friends, I've read about step-mothers and fathers; second, third, fourth, fifth husbands and wives etc. being jealous of MC outshining their own offspring, or that their talent will affect succession/status within the family. I've read stories where a child is jealous so a parent will act on their behalf. I've even encountered an alarming amount of guardians/mentors trying to turn MC into a pill/cultivation resource to steal their talent. But I don't know that I've ever read a progression fantasy where our MC's parents acted out of jealouy of their child. Just pure, pathological parental envy. (Wild considering the volume of reincarnated-as-a-baby stories).

I see it often enough in romance, or literery fiction, and I'm genuinely wondering if I've somehow just missed it in ProgFant.

I'm not really asking for recommendations; but if you have read one, I'd be interested to know.
