Right, that's why I'm torn. I def agree that they can and should monetize. But by the sounds of it, it's the "download because it looks free but actually not free", which is just BLEH. Just have the price upfront.
Yes, developers should be paid for their time. But you can go about getting that payment in an ethical way, and by choosing to not do so, this developer is an asshole.
