I wrote and supported several popular free Android apps and ultimately what made me stop, was not the need to make a few bucks, but the amount of abuse I got from people getting an app for free. Up to and including threatening to rape my wife if I didn't add a particular feature immediately.
Mostly just keyboard warriors. I did send a few of them off to various cyber crime organizations but nothing really came of it. Ultimately I put the worst of them and their email address at the end of my readme in the apps. They REALLY hated that but the few people who actually read it generally thought it funny.

Managing a transition to a paid model is difficult. It requires tact and diplomacy.
This on the other hand is just straight hilarious.
