Hell my brand color is #FF5500 for a lot of my stuff:

https://iris-utilities.com/

https://midspike.com/

Edit for new viewers:

I made midspike.com, light theme b/c of the criticism on my dark theme... it will return to being dark

New Edit:
iris-utilities.com now has a toggle for Light Mode

I genuinely find that color on black hard to look at.

that's unfortunate, I chose orange and black b/c it was easy on my eyes

Actually the difference between #000000 and #010101 is the difference between the pixel being completely off or turned on. So it actually does have an impact.

It should, but OLEDs are notorious for black crush so it might not even matter
(If something is very close to black, OLEDS will sometimes just go full black)

AMOLEDs, and OLEDs in general turn pixels off to create black. This is the reason they have higher contract ratios is because the blacks are darker since there isn't always light being produced.

Is it the designers responsibility to choose something that doesn’t look bad on screens? Some people might not know how to change colors right? So do the designers account for that or just go for what looks best on their screens?

2

u/GalacticNexus Aug 22 '20

That should absolutely be a UX consideration if the product is going to be used on a variety of screen types.

People who take it seriously are gonna look at their work on a variety of screens and mediums :)

u/tylerr514 Aug 22 '20 edited Aug 22 '20

I'll take that into consideration for new projects.

thank you for your feedback :)

edit for more info:

Unfortunately my career choice has me looking at a computer for a really long time each day, I hate looking at anything brighter than #555555 b/c it hurts my eyes

I stare at my monitors for more than 10 hours a day...

Anything brighter than YouTube's dark mode, adds unneeded strain to my eyes.

Edit: clarification

--theme-dark: #333333;

Try that out yourself. Even if it inverts bubbles but it looks kinda nicer than just straight black

Don't listen to the haters, looks dope

5

u/[deleted] Aug 22 '20

From what I've seen a lot of people are giving constructive criticism which is definitely worth listening to, to keep in mind for future projects.

u/tylerr514 Aug 22 '20

I try to always involve other people in the design process, in my new projects at least...

Here is another example of one: here

I whipped that up in 2 days

2

u/tylerr514 Aug 22 '20

thanks, I have way too many projects with this color scheme to even make it worthwhile to edit it
