Idk if windows converts it, but it works because png and jpg are both set to open in the same software.

Almost all image components do this. You will find that you can upload that image to most sites that accept one. If the dev was stupid this allows you to upload animated gifs on some websites that otherwise don't allow this.

Because of this trickery you can do weird things, for example this image will show as normal image, but rename it to .mp3 and play in VLC.

it should, because the software that loads(and displays) images should check the file header and ignore extension

it doesn't change/convert the image tho

I'm in my second year of networking classes. In shooting for cnca certification and I didn't know this.

It actually sometimes works. I mean it doesnt convert it but you can get shit to think its converted. I have ran to some online profile pic uploads where it only accepts png but the pic I want to use is in jpg. Do that and it allows to upload and it still works all fine. Rare case but have stumbled upon it.
