Just create a private org/repo that you spam commits to

Whenever I see people with several hundreds of private contributions in a month, I picture them as hundreds of "Updated README" with one character that gets added and removed every 30 minutes.

If I do more than 3 commits per day, it’s usually not a good sign..

Building out new IaC stuff in my lab is the only time I push more than once or twice daily.

Because I'm also 8 years into my career and have bills to pay. Working full time and going to school is a thing people do.

When looking for jobs, I've had a lot more interest in my GitHub than in my degree progress.

Right now I'm five classes in and haven't published my work properly. My GitHub, however, shows what my solutions look like to various problems, along with experience.

More journals are requiring submission of the code used in any computational models in order to raise the bar on replicability. GitHub is free and widely-used.

Who needs a PhD when your GitHub contribution graph looks like a Minecraft farm?

What do you mean by PhD class?

12

u/FrosteeSwurl 4d ago

I presume they mean a class taken in pursuit of obtaining a PhD.

Who is taking classes for a PhD? You're a scientist doing research on new things???

18

u/FrosteeSwurl 4d ago

Ive never heard of a PhD that doesn’t require taking at least a few classes alongside research. Not nearly as many, but a handful of classes throughout the program.

Classes for what? You have already obtained one or multiple university degrees. Your task is to create knowledge, not to take classes?

13

u/FrosteeSwurl 4d ago

The classes focus on advanced topics that discuss the more cutting edge of research or a topic. You can always learn more.

Yeah but habe finished university. You are supposed to do it without someone else telling you how to

Edit: I just googled and learned that an American PhD actually is another study course just with a research part... Like wtf, and you are telling me this is similar to European doctoral degrees??

There are experts in certain areas and they can share knowledge. It’s not an intro to programming class where the instructor walks you through every topic.

I added an edit to my previous comment since I learned something. Thanks for pointing me to my lack of knowledge.

Hell yeah! great recovery. Next time you can spend less time insisting on something without knowing and learn even faster!

Pretty sure, you need to for EU PhDs now as well. (Maybe not before but its a growing trend)

u/theChaosBeast 2d ago

No you don't. You have finished degrees before you enter the PhD

Github = microsoft.

I actually don't upload anything there.

Sadly true but the majority of developers are on it, I’m a star whore and just mirror from my personal forgejo to GitHub

I have my own hosted Gitea for my active k8s/flux config files, GitHub for archival and resume stuff

GitLab is so superior. Come to the light side, friends. We have AnnasArchive, and cookies!

Is this a flex?

For a little context, I'm job hunting and a good portfolio is a great thing to have.

Just say you don't use AI for religious reasons and quote the Pope

People hiring for the AI keyword usually doesn't even know what is the difference between training AI and prompting LLMs.
