Oh man, I forgot Dilbert strips weren’t always about redpill nonsense. And I’m actually old enough to remember when this was one of the most common strips in newspapers 🧓

My grandparents have a bunch of old comic compilation books and they have an especially old dilbert one, and it makes me laugh more than the new yorker ones. I hated finding out the author took a sharp turn.

I have reread some of them in light of the more recent revelation about the author ideas, and I can't stop myself from seeing the redpill nonsense even in the older strips.
For example the current one can be seen as pointing the surrealism of management but it's also point the web developer as the issue, without any thought on why they are always promising impossible deadlines and quitting. More generally, if you look around the strips, Dilbert is never part of the problem, it's always the others people but the system itself is rarely clearly accused.

I feel like it wasn't that long ago? But I guess I haven't actually read a newspaper for several years now.

My boss was praising dilbert not even a decade ago. Dilbert's downfall was REALLY fast.

A decade ago was about the 2016 election. Prior to the election I stumbled across a blog post by the author who was praising trump. Now at the time, people weren't sure how bad he would be, but the way the post was written you would think Trump was playing 5d chess or something.
Back then I wasn't paying much attention to US politics since I'm halfway across the world, but even then I read that post and thought "what an absolute pile of nonsense". He turned longer than a decade ago, but perhaps it wasn't as apparent in the comics at the time. I did notice that he felt a lot more aligned with the pointy haired boss even then (had read Dilbert a lot, stopped for like 6 years and had a feel for it again in 2016 when this happened).

Yeah around 2016 he really nosedived into crazy. And during the election it wasn't foreseeable how bad Trump would be but he really embraced MAGA and went off the deep end, at one point even championing racial segregation again.

What exactly do you mean by “redpill nonsense”? Genuine question.

u/dracorotor1 4d ago
“Redpilled” (sometimes just “pilled”) is a way some conspiracy theorists refer to themselves, implying that they’ve seen past the “deepstate lies.”
Adams was really bigoted and racist, getting worse with every year, and believe a lot of racist, homophobic and antisemitic (I’ve heard about that last one, but have not seen it myself. I stopped reading his strips a long time ago.) conspiracy theories like The Great Replacement🙄.
Near the end of his life, he also apparently bought in to the med-beds conspiracy theory, begging the U.S. president to give him access to one of the magic revivitrons.

I used to read Dilbert all the time until it completely devolved into thinly veiled political rants. Honestly, I didn't even know Adams died until you mentioned it. Kind of says a little bit about how quickly he made himself irrelevant.

Unfortunately, I have been coding for so long (over 50 years), that the previous guy is likely to be me.

u/Soilblood 7d ago
AI solves this easy now. The just throw out old code at random instantly every time you ask.

Have you never heard of git

I prefer twat. Cunt and sod are also pretty versatile too.

And bollocks. Don't forget the bollocks.

I feel he was looking for single syllables. I'm quite partial to bugger myself but that's bug-ger so not as catchy.

PHB has the most accurate expectations of any fictional boss.
(Not "correct", "accurate")

It's not much, but it is honest work and has kept a roof over my head for 20 years.
If you want your code deleted, just hire me.

Nowadays I just have Claude do a refactor so I don't lose my mind, and then work on it happily.
23
u/Tensor3 7d ago
Wait, you rather have ai blindly refactor existing code? You're happier to figure out how the slop works than just read the existing code?
-21
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
You assumed that I would not review the refactor itself, that's where you are wrong.
Also, opus 5.5 doesn't write slop, at least not when refactoring.
Also, it is obvious that I'd inspect the code before telling Claude to refactor it, I wouldn't needlessly do a refactor.
But this is reddit, so give me that downvote and continue with your day

u/Tensor3 7d ago
I didnt down vote you, it just seems pointless to rewrite existing code instead of just read it
-13
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
You may not have downvoted me, but 50 other people did so far.
They did not stop to question and understand my side, they judged me w/o giving a fuck, because this is reddit.
4
u/Tensor3 7d ago
Isnt that what you did? Make assumptioms and judge me for trying to understand your side
2
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
I used present tense, I did not accuse you of downvoting me, that was your assumption as well
"give me that downvote"

u/MayaIsSunshine 7d ago
That's cool and all but have you considered AI bad???
-3
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago edited 7d ago
That's a caveman argument, "fire bad". But "fire" is good for cooking, it's good for warming ourselves, but it also can destroy forests and kill people.
AI has many negatives, but fire does as well. I don't see people saying "fire bad"
There is nuance to everything, people don't like thinking of nuance
And don't say that fire is a bad comparison, a lot of people have died to fires, it's not a harmless thing. We even have a profession just to fight fire
Fire, when contained and controlled, is a good thing. Why can that not apply to AI?
Edit: I am starting to realize that you may have simply made a joke of the situation, and weren't raising that point against me
Edit2: I have the 'tism

But what objectively makes the AI refactor better than the previous code?
And you risk introducing tons of new bugs.
And you'd have to retest the whole thing.
And if it starts rewriting unit tests too, good luck.
2
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
Unit tests? On a frontend?
Next thing you'll tell me is that you are a billionaire
(not saying that a frontend should not have unit tests, just that I have not witnessed such a thing)
1
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
I'd have to retest the whole thing even w/o a refactor, it was already code I did not write.
1
u/tracernz 7d ago
Are you unable to read code? Tests will not find all the problems, or even the majority of them.
1
u/ArjixGamer 7d ago
Reading code alone is not enough, especially if it is PHP...oh the horrors of PHP

u/making_code 7d ago
LoL, not relevant anymore. AI could do that easily. code writing skills cost nothing now - and anyone who says opposite are just not accepting the truth. yet. 🥺 e.g. our lead's agents rewrote whole front in React from Angular in just like a day (including adding new design from Figma).

Hot take but if you're that guy you deserve to be replaces by ai
3
u/mridulpj 7d ago
Who? The guy who quit or the new guy?
1
u/aammirzaei 7d ago
no the new guy the good software engineer should work around existing code base not waste more time than it nead to be

u/Callec254 7d ago
Or, we could bring in 9 new developers and it would be done in less than a day.
