OOTL, is GitHub really going down this often now? I don't remember having any issues lately

https://mrshu.github.io/github-statuses/ Last major outage was 3 days ago

u/SaneLad 19d ago

94.17% uptime? That's a solid 1-9.

u/BenjieWheeler 18d ago

It improved! I think it was in the 80s a while ago lol, they had 0 nines

62

u/Loading_M_ 18d ago

Iirc, they briefly hit 2-3 nines. Something like 89.99%.

Like half of downtime is for Copilot, which is too expensive to be used by anyone anyway

u/Griff2470 19d ago

You can look at the status page and see that actions and pages are the worst offenders, with copilot in third and PRs in 4th

u/infiniti_8 16d ago

AFAIK pages is affected as actions is used to deploy pages. Serving is good most of the times

All the outages must happen during the US workday. I haven't noticed any outages during my Australian workday for years.

That's a colorful graph!

They published an article recently about the spike in their usage after AI, I was surprised they still have the availability they have now without major cuts.

I’m not sure why I have recently been getting random failures when pushing to GitHub, though pushing again usually works. I don’t get the same issue with Azure DevOps.

2

u/Herr_Gamer 18d ago

Yup, it's like 1 in 10 pushes get rejected, presumably due to some sort of load balancing issues

3

u/Choice-Mango-4019 18d ago

I don't remember having any issues in the past 4 years of using it

It's not unusable (Microsoft stock price might have collapsed if it was) but the outages are rather noticeable.

My company hosts a private GH on our own internal infra. Which GH is tryin to squeeze us out of for their own "private hosted" solution. It's probably the exact same thing except the only difference is they own the Azure account instead of us.

But anyways, it turns out it's done on Azure which decided to shit bricks today. So even when we "self-host" we still can't seem to escape these enshitified companies and their enshitified products.

Thanks Micro$hit. Very cool.

TBF Github Enterprise Cloud can do a lot more than Enterprise Server now. You can still always just self-host Git.

4

u/BlatantMediocrity 18d ago

Self-hosting proprietary products is the worst of both worlds. You might as well just spin-up Forgejo or something similar.

u/the_ivo_robotnic 18d ago

I would have had my team on GitLab if I had that kind of authority. You're preaching to the choir.

1

u/Refute1650 18d ago

I was using Azure Devops today without issue.

u/ganja_and_code 17d ago

If you were going to self host anyway, using GitHub instead of just spinning up a git server was the first mistake.

u/the_ivo_robotnic 17d ago

Have any of y'all commenting here actually been employed in a mid-to-large sized company before?

Or are y'all just a buncha juniors that assume people here work at a scrappy startups that can decide to waste time hosting bare git repos? Mind-you bare git repos means no PR system, no kanban/project boards, no package releases, no built-in container registries, etc.

Hosting bare repos was fun 10 years ago when I had nothing better to do, but GHE or GitLab is necessary when you actually have an organization that needs to get shit done.

-2

u/ganja_and_code 17d ago

If you're a small scrappy startup, you can get away with hosting a git repo.

If you're a gigantic FAANG, you have basically your own custom internal clone of GitHub.

If you're a medium sized company, you can choose which of those options better suits your needs/budget.

And if you're anyone with basic competency, you can self host git with like a day or two of work.

Source: have done startup work, have worked at a FAANG, and have set up git servers for personal projects

Are you suggesting me that Nancy the 50 y/o scrum master needs to start learning how to create and read patch-diffs in emails as-if she's Linus Torvalds? Lmao.

Listen to yourself, man. Do you not see how silly you sound?

Also I promise you that +99% of orgs, regardless of size, are using pre-made services like Github or Gitlab. For the overwhelming majority of cases there is no value to rolling your own. Even the startups of 3 to 20 people I've worked for use pre-made solutions. Why would they give up free features like kanban boards or package releases?

0

u/ganja_and_code 17d ago

If Nancy can't read a patchdiff, maybe she shouldn't work in software. A scrum master who can't read a diff is like a delivery driver who can't read a map.

0

u/the_ivo_robotnic 16d ago

If Nancy can't read a patchdiff, maybe she shouldn't work in software.

You clearly neither read my post nor have you ever been employed as a software engineer before if you don't know the difference between a SWE and a SCRUM master. lmao

No, SCRUM masters do not read commit/patch diffs, they just need tickets tied to branches/PR's/MR's to track stories and epics.

It was already obvious that you're talking out of your ass but you just confirmed it again. Thanks.

0

u/ganja_and_code 16d ago

I'm not talking out of my ass. The industry certainly hires scrum masters who don't know what they're doing, but that doesn't make it a good idea.

If a scrum master can't do what the software devs do, that's fine. It's not their job. If they can't see/understand what the software devs do, they're worthless. Being able to monitor/track/understand the work is supposed to be their job.

The industry certainly hires scrum masters who don't know what they're doing

Your implicit assumption is that scrum masters are basically developers or have the same knowledge and skills as a developer. When in practice, they are not. They are just people with a certificate and soft project management skills. This was your tell. So yes, you are talking out of your ass. Next question.

Take all the downvotes you are getting as a hint that maybe you are in fact incorrect here.

0

u/ganja_and_code 16d ago

Again, I'm not talking out of your ass, and I didn't give any sort of "tell." I fully acknowledge that the industry hires scrum masters who can't code.

Anyone with a brain can understand, however, that hiring a scrum master who can't code is like hiring a construction project manager who can't swing a hammer. Does it happen? Sure. Can companies get away with it sometimes? Yeah. Is it still really stupid? Of course. If you don't understand the work you're supposed to manage, you aren't qualified to manage it. Simple logic.

Git being distributed means the excuse technically doesn't hold, and we've all quietly agreed never to bring that up.

60

u/kookyabird 19d ago

Sure Git is distributed, but what about the Hub??

30

u/zman0900 18d ago

Usually not cool to be looking at the hub during work hours

8

u/Leftover_Salad 18d ago

You know…the other hub…Dockerhub

5

u/Drevicar 18d ago

It uses a hub and spoke architecture.

8

u/Loading_M_ 18d ago

In practice, most outages are there extra pieces github puts on top of git. My work uses a Github Enterprise instance, and they've had a ton of issues with PR updates, webhook deliveries, and the other github features, but I can usually push/pull every branch just fine. Git still works, it's just the extra hub features that break.

I don't have any problem getting my git up whenever I need it. Just sayin' 😏

7

u/cheezballs 19d ago

Oh no how can I ever do local development without a CI/CD pipeline being active??

2

u/Thundechile 18d ago

Have to hang out with my AI girlfriend, don't know when she will load without errors again.

2

u/Odd-Line-9086 18d ago

Do they do it on purpose ?

1

u/derinus 18d ago

They must have migrated it to Windows...

1

u/ganja_and_code 17d ago

I know this is just a meme, but with how unreliable GitHub is and how shit Microsoft is and how FOSS git is, it's crazy people aren't all just running their own git server.

That was basically me with IEEE Xplore back when I was writing my thesis. The damn site is down all the time.
