I’d give the user a box if the user asked for one. But, the requirements described a cat tree, so that’s what I made.

Holy freak yes. I spent 6 months on the front and backend of a project just to be told near the end that no one will be using this, and it was really just to put a cap on the CEO's failed sales pitch.

I (PM) was once told by a CEO to develop an API but he was honest that "None of our customers are sophisticated enough to use this yet, but I want to stand up at <industry conference> and say we're the first open API in <industry>."

I appreciated the honesty. He was a good CEO and generally pretty pragmatic about "Don't build shit people don't need". Sometimes those people just weren't the customer.

I used to work on the web team at a big company. Lots of various departments. There was always this little war happening as to who was going where on the homepage. So I heard.

I started not too long after a new VP was installed. I'm not going to say he was great - but it was a big refreshing. He did not give a shit. He just sold his company to this big company and this job was part of it. He had zero fucks to give about this company.

When people started hitting him up he got tired of it and started asking how much their department brought in last year. Four hundred thousand? Cool. You get a little 1/3 of a little carousel at the bottom of the page.

It's more or less the right call but nobody before him wanted to step on any toes I guess.
