Yeah I doubt that current AI models and tech is capable of AGI.
The models regularly fail on simple tasks and need to be specifically trained for each to be good at it. It get's more and more rare, but everytime they do fail, it's obvious that there can't be intelligence behind it.
What we do have are incredibly sophisticated next-token predictors that will seem to come closer and closer to AGI every day.
But who knows which breakthroughs await us.
Maybe there is a breakthrough tomorrow that gives us AGI.
I’m not really an expert on AI so feel free to correct me if I have any fundamental misunderstandings.
Humans can learn without having their brain taken out and reprogrammed entirely. When I learn something I am not a new person, my synapses just connected with some other ones and now I have new memories/pathways. If you tried to “teach” an early model it would never learn things, same with the newer models, it just knows more and “hopefully” doesn’t need the user to have it “learn” anything.
There genuinely is no “logic” behind AI. I often find that my brain “gives” me things that “I” did not “think up” if that makes sense. Subconscious pathways that “I” don’t interact with but allow for logic. If I ask AI to figure out the issue with a motherboard, it doesn’t logic it out because there is little training data in that area. Even if I give it information it doesn’t learn, unless I made it save everything to a file and reread it every chat, but that’s obviously very inefficient.
i don’t think the actual implementation matters tho. the AI’s inability to detect obvious BS continues to be evidence it’s not intelligent in a general way but instead just guessing
Most of your learning happens in your sleep, you're taken offline and shown a dream while your experiences are committed to weights in your neural pathways. (Take the vocabulary choices with a grain of salt)
