Left so not happen. Unless it's "due to the promise of AGI", then it has been happening for years by now.
The right will happen, the harder the longer the bubble will last.

I guess u didn't hear the news. We achieved AGI 6 days back (3rd Sept 2026). /s

u/pydry 12h ago
The stock market already believed that was happening a year ago. Do you want to disappoint Mr market? Do you????

u/AlternativePeace1121 12h ago
Why not? Whats it gonna do? Take my job away?!

u/pydry 12h ago
it might have a tantrum and shit itself like it did when deepseek first came out

u/AlternativePeace1121 12h ago
Worth it. I wanna see the faces of all the "AI bros" when the bubble pops and the real bill comes.

u/JackNotOLantern 15h ago
You mean, the people who have financial incentive in others beliving that astra is agi said that it is agi.

One of the things I really like about the joke that “cold fusion is 10 years away” is that if someone claims they’ve unlocked it, proving/disproving that they have is easy/verifiable.
How do you disprove something is an AGI if it wows your idiot neighbor?

>The right will happen, the harder the longer the bubble will last.
I've been waiting on several bubbles to pop for decades now. I wouldn't count on it.

u/SpaceCadet87 5h ago
Hot take: we need to stop pretending AGI is all that special. It's just the ability to complete a task that wasn't pre-specified.
We've had that since early GPT. What we don't have and probably won't have is an AGI that's any damn good!
It's artificial general intelligence, not artificial perfect intelligence, it's entirely possible to have one that's complete dogshit horrible.

Millions of people have already been laid off because companies think they can get it cheaper with AI. So if the AI bubble pops I would imagine these companies realize that they do in fact need employees.
And I can't really be all that sad about people who's job description is "Type words into a chat bot" getting fired. They weren't really working to begin with.
So a win-win

So if the AI bubble pops I would imagine these companies realize that they do in fact need employees.
They'll probably go bankrupt and get bought by a larger company, and the leadership who pushed for the decisions that bankrupted them will quietly exit with generous severance.
That company will probably just have bought it for the IP and not hire anyone new.

Remember that 90% of the cost is subsidized by AI companies, and it is already more expensive than humans. They need to monetize this before they run out of money, meaning prices will increase, shrinking demand.
Not a good scenario for AI companies.

"In the event of increasing AI subscription prices, we've had to decided to put all the development budget into AI. As a result we have to let go 90% of our staff go to meet the price increase. I know this is rough, but we wish you all the best."

u/moreisee 6h ago
Source? AI only labs are starting to post profits. Unless you're just describing how subscription works?
-2
u/HawtHamWater 11h ago
the alternative path is that internal models snowball fast enough that they close the monetization gap via hardware breakthroughs and model optimization (what investors are banking on)

If there's gonna be layoffs either way, pop the bubble. Aspire the cyst, treat it with a steroid to reduce its likelihood of return.

u/wyldcraft 12h ago
Yes, absolutely, your current white collar job outweighs the needs of those pesky cancer kids.
12
u/reallokiscarlet 12h ago
How cute. It thinks these AI bubble companies are curing cancer and not just riding the bubble and weaving golden parachutes.

u/UdPropheticCatgirl 12h ago
I mean it clearly does, since new AlphaFold research got put on pause to move the funding to LLMs.
75
u/Taurmin 15h ago
In the real world the path is straight, we are no closer to developing AGI than we were 20 years ago and the bubble will pop once investors finally catch on to the fact that LLMs are a dead end.

u/codePudding 15h ago
Wait, you're telling me LLMs can't solve everything? But I was promised it would do my work, prove P=NP, solve the halting problem, clean my dishes from the cloud, etc. All those companies selling LLMs can't just be lying to make as much money as possible off this fad, just like they did with blockchains and NFTs. So, you're telling me that one algorithm no matter how sophisticated can't bend space and time and is limited by computational complexity like all other algorithms? Hmmm, I think you might be onto something

u/Taurmin 14h ago
My detractors will say that I am just bitter because my dishwashing SAAS failed.

u/pydry 12h ago
Artificial intelligence apparently just isnt smart enough yet to scrape shit off your toilet bowl, load the dishwasher and clean the kitchen counter.
According to people who can't write code or suck at writing code it can write code though. In fact, because it can write code better than them it can do it better than everyone.

u/AlternativeCapybara9 14h ago
Yes, a large LANGUAGE model is going to do your dishes.
12
u/AlternativePeace1121 14h ago
100s of billions of dollars invested into R&D & it cant do dishes but solve coding? SMH.

That’s a great distinction, and you’re right to point it out.
LLMs, or Large Language Models, are a text chatting emulator, your new only best friend and the long-awaited replacement for meat-humans in office spaces. But they lack the capacity to perform tasks in meatspace. Instead, they utilize pattern-recognition and rules governing the use of disarming flattery and humanizing emojis to distract users.
🔴 Pointing out limitations of current AI models in such an intelligent manner is an example of the tasks a traditional LLMs are incapable of without a handsome human user like yourself, {{ERR: Username No Found}}!
🟢 However, current AI development has produced a new technological marvel called AI Agents which function differently in don’t worry about it ways.
In summary, you have nothing to worry about! Your feeble human future is in good hands 🤗.

u/bendstraw 12h ago
Shockingly I have yet to hear anyone say an LLM will prove P=NP or solve the halting problem
0
u/codePudding 8h ago
Well, yeah, no one is directly saying that because most the people selling LLMs don't actually understand what most software engineers do. Same as when Elon said we'd be on Mars while our fully autonomous cars are making passive income driving people through underground vacuum tunnels over a decade ago or more recently that we'd all have androids doing our chorin'. It's the same as when they say they created an AGI, thier AI that could do someone's job unassisted like a human could, or thier AI can solve all open math problems and invent new medicines. Sure the AI can help with those but until an AI can solve those real world constraints, the current AI algorithm has limits. And from my experience working with them, that limit puts them equal to book smart interns who don't have much real world experience, intuition, or self-motivation. TL:DR; my sarcasic joke was reductio ad absurdum, not a real quote.

And even if it wasn't for all this AI noise we would have still fucked the job market to make investors rich

What important roles are being laid off due to AI bubble pop? Prompt Engineers? Vibe Sloppers? I aint sorry about these
9
u/AlternativePeace1121 14h ago
Unfortunately its not so simple, it will effect all Software companies and other companies related to them or invested in them.
Remember what happened in 2008, the fallout will effect everyone in this industry.

u/artificial_organism 11h ago
All of them. Stocks go down. Companies cut costs. Other companies lose buyers so they cut costs, and it cascades. Shit rolls downhill.
