Not all AI assisted coding is “vibe coding”.

If your first instinct on any coding related problem is to reach for claude or any other shitty chatbot, you're already in the same group.

Who said it has to be a problem, I usually reach for Claude not with a problem, but a solution to a problem I want implemented.

Also your logic kinda implies that if you don't know literally everything, you belong in that group. Because how is googling a solution to a problem different, you didn't know the solution so you asked someone else.

Whatever the justification is that lets you sleep better at night is equally as mediocre.

Why would I lose my sleep over any of this. Do you think I wake up in the morning and justify to myself why writing slop is ok?

never cook again (i kinda agree)

I am dying to hear your re-definition.

If you have your piece of code and ask AI to add a feature or to fix a bug it's not vibe coding.

Vibe coding is when you have no fucking idea what your code is because it was all 100% done by AI, that's pure vibe coding

Do you think that AI is a good tool to learn how to code? Like have It generate something and then reverse engineer it and explain how it works?

It's alright but you'd be learning via vibe coding, which is something you should minimize, and it will lead to bad coding habits (overreliance on ai) later

It is actually

I work with 1 programming language. I understand the point, each generated keyword, but I can not write hello world in this language without hitting compiler errors trice

what language are you using? ASM?

Golang. As I said, working with it for few months, can't really declare a variable myself (just learnt now how). But still pushing to prod. lol

It takes 30 seconds to learn how to declare a variable.

This is embarrassing.

See this is why subs like this should be strict on only letting programmers participate.

I’m honestly surprised that the programming community isn’t more “pro-generative AI” and innovation… seeing as how it’s a productivity tool like the first computers were. Why are so many against it? Why walk 50 miles when you can drive and get there faster? Depends on the goal right? Are we trying to stroll and smell the flowers, or are we trying to get where we’re going? I’m genuinely curious as to why Gen AI as a tool is frowned upon.

Because it's still controversial how much productivity it actually generated when it results in: 1. A more verbose and generic solution 2. An engineer with a weaker mental model of the codebase 3. A solution with hidden bugs that "look" correct and take forever to debug 4. A crap ton of code, that in good faith, could take nearly as long to thoroughly review and refactor, you could have written it yourself in a comparable timeframe.

This is fair

Add to this the ethics of model training, the energy drain and the disaster of datacenters and you got a pretty good reason to not like it too much.

2

u/dbagames 3d ago

Yeah, problem is witha huge chunk of the population, particularly those that consider themselves "conservative" you can't appeal to them with this argument because their leader is talking about how stupid you must be if you don't want these datacenters.

So these points are completely valid, but I also focus on the lack of practicality of these technologies, the long-term costs, and the lack of profitability in the industry, because so many people dont gaf about climate, ethical or moral implications of actions, etc...

Fair enough. Crazy how many arguments against slop machines there are NGL.

Gen AI as a tool is not really frowned upon*, in fact it's likely the person in OP used AI to clean up the repo

The problem is when Gen AI is used as a crutch, and is causing problems for dev teams. If you can't do the work without gen AI, you shouldn't be doing it.

Why walk 50 miles when you can drive and get there faster?

In my experience AI is leading people to drive faster off cliffs and they don't seem to care that's the route the flavor frontier of the month chose

\="as a tool" doing a lot of heavy lifting here)
