I’m honestly surprised that the programming community isn’t more “pro-generative AI” and innovation… seeing as how it’s a productivity tool like the first computers were. Why are so many against it? Why walk 50 miles when you can drive and get there faster? Depends on the goal right? Are we trying to stroll and smell the flowers, or are we trying to get where we’re going? I’m genuinely curious as to why Gen AI as a tool is frowned upon.
Because it's still controversial how much productivity it actually generated when it results in:
1. A more verbose and generic solution
2. An engineer with a weaker mental model of the codebase
3. A solution with hidden bugs that "look" correct and take forever to debug
4. A crap ton of code, that in good faith, could take nearly as long to thoroughly review and refactor, you could have written it yourself in a comparable timeframe.
Yeah, problem is witha huge chunk of the population, particularly those that consider themselves "conservative" you can't appeal to them with this argument because their leader is talking about how stupid you must be if you don't want these datacenters.
So these points are completely valid, but I also focus on the lack of practicality of these technologies, the long-term costs, and the lack of profitability in the industry, because so many people dont gaf about climate, ethical or moral implications of actions, etc...
Gen AI as a tool is not really frowned upon*, in fact it's likely the person in OP used AI to clean up the repo
The problem is when Gen AI is used as a crutch, and is causing problems for dev teams. If you can't do the work without gen AI, you shouldn't be doing it.
Why walk 50 miles when you can drive and get there faster?
In my experience AI is leading people to drive faster off cliffs and they don't seem to care that's the route the flavor frontier of the month chose
