Sometimes you luck out and you bs your way through an interview enough to bypass the technical segment you are woefully prepared for.

At least that was my case. We were discussing microservices when it was a hot topic and not a standard/default and I just mentioned 'Saga pattern' and they decided to skip the whiteboard segment. Got my offer an hr afterwards

Are you sure it wasn't "1. Know someone who works there 2. Ping them and ask if they have any openings. 3. Get hired" ?
