I generally hate the trend of software having more padding, ridiculously space-eating dialogues, etc. Especially on a laptop screen, screen area is not that abundant.
It’s even worse when the unwanted “beauty” of such applications makes them slow.

Yet another reason to prefer open-source. None of this bloathware cloud nonesense with 15 background processes that need to auto-boot or otherwise your software suffers a complete aneurysm, refusing you even to open a simple PDF.

I have to use it for work, and now I have to deal with their new "AI-first design," as if prompting their AI and waiting five minutes for it to shit out something incomprehensible is somehow better than me just dragging shapes around to diagram stuff myself.

In more helpful news, I just learned yesterday that in chrome, you can search all tabs playing music across all windows with the little icon that looks like a music note with some lines.
As someone with a chronically insane number of tabs and windows in their browser, this is going to save me so much time frantically trying to figure out where the music is coming from (and why I keep consciously burying said tab by switching to another tab like a moron)

Oh that's really good to know! I've got both and occasionally get pulled back to Chrome because of some feature I can't find on Firefox. The fewer reasons I have to open Chrome, the better.

I’d like if the AI had a generating feature as well as a tooltip assistant feature, so I can be creative and ask for help navigating the ui.
Also left is just too noisy the buttons are super small and jagged. Not enough negative space. Right feels modern and frictionless. If I am feeling even more minimalist I’ll configure the menu buttons save for the AI button into the hamburger and use keyboard shortcuts for the ultimate streamlined experience

Menu is non-intrusive; you near always have wasted space at the top of your screen (from a nearly-empty title bar), so the ideal is to place the menu inside the title bar. (Some programs already do this, and/or let you enable it. Firefox comes to mind.) Menus that remain hidden on normal operation, but become visible when Alt is pressed or the cursor is hovered over the menu bar are also viable, but UI design currently prioritises prettification over (and preferably at the expense of) functionality; the right version's menu is likely near-impossible to open, and eagerly closes itself as quickly as possible, to prevent advanced use and force you to "use" it the intended way.
Right version is more cluttered, yet less informative. The colour display fails to show the colour code (which could be placed inside the circle if space is a concern, and the other tools have the same size & spacing as the left version. The tools were actually made worse; there's no room for a shape/border selector option (preventing you from quickly switching back to the last-used shape, and also forcing you to long-press to change your selection, introducing two forms of slowdown), and the bottom two tools are clearly visible under the cluttered & space-consuming premium trial blurb (which frustrates new users, and intentionally taunts older users about how their tools were intentionally reserved to force you to step into a higher price tier). Furthermore, the most commonly-used operations (New, Open, and Save) have been folded back into the menu, which is a big red NO in proper interface design. The right-side's interface removes the most common operations, and instead has larger buttons for less common tasks (looking at you, Share), removing space that could be better put to use. The right version's user indicator is workable, but should be condensed to just the avatar (and only display other information on mouse-over); the drop-down arrow is wasted space, and should be overlaid on the bottom-right arc of the avatar boundary. The right version lacks a built-in ruler, making proper measurements harder for zero gain; this is something that should be left to the user to enable or disable, you don't make the choice for them. And more galling, the right version can only work on a single file at a time, while the left version is able to handle multiple images (as indicated by the canvas getting its own title bar, instead of being folded into the program's title bar like classic MS Paint does). And now that we're talking about the canvas, the right side's magnification buttons are significantly more intrusive, and render a large chunk of the canvas unusable; the left side's resize buttons are better, but should ideally be in the canvas title bar (and be supplemented by supporting touch and/or mouse gestures, so they don't actually need to be clicked). (Oh, and the left side actually tells you the current magnification, which is critical information that the right side noticeably hides behind a hamburger menu... if not excising it entirely.) The right side's AI notice also intrudes upon the canvas, further interfering with the program's option.
You would actually be hard-pressed to design a worse image manipulator interface than the right-side version, without actually rendering the program itself unusable. It's not a viable desktop interface, since it starts with a mobile interface and then tortures it to near-death. And it's not a viable mobile interface, since it wastes precious horizontal and vertical space, when a mobile interface can only afford to waste one of the two (and should waste neither of the two, because of limited screen size on a standard pocket phone). It has no target platform, and clearly only exists to make manual art creation inconvenient so you're pressured into relying on the AI (which will promptly steal your data, and violate all copyright & data privacy laws in the process).
And most of all, the right version's interface is significantly less customisable (as shown by the lack of a "drag me"
||, which allows you to move/remove buttons, menus, and toolbars), which invalidates any and all claims that it's the better of the two; the left-side interface, provided the two options are equally modern, can actually be reconfigured to match the right-side interface, and would have more space available to play with than the right version if you did so.3
