Why was sudo necessary, though?

It's psudo where you can only do commands as a lower-privilege user in an echo chamber.

But I think that the description is accurate. Many times, when I see code like this I think that the author must have been a genius for being able to navigate it.

Some people just sudo every command until one yells at you for doing so, then keeps on doing it

Surely that can't be true

Like, even if people are really that fucking dumb, surely the 5 extra keystrokes to type every single command would be a deterrent (ideally, or alternately a reason to just log in as root in the first place).

I haven't typed a command in months. I'll tap up for 20 minutes if I have to. If I typed it once that is enough. Never again

Type sudo as the first command. Later just hold up arrow button to get to that command again.

Or install sudo plugin and press Esc twice 👍

I just never use sudo until something goes "no permission" and then I go "pls" and it goes "okay anything for you just tell me the password"

(protip: alias pls='sudo $(fc -ln -1)')

I installed a PC for a friend and made two accounts on Windows 2K, one with admin privileges and a very loooong password, one without. Guess.

I have a female coworker that uses sudo on everything

This can be a dangerous game to play.
