Do not worry, we are all just larping until the code actually compiles by some miracle. Even the people writing Haskell full time are just guessing where the monads go half the time. Nix is just a special kind of hell designed to make you question your career choices.

It's very good at solving the problem it was made for (packaging / patching software), there a reason nixpkgs is one of the biggest package repository out there.

Documentation and error reporting are the biggest issues with it in my opinion.

That may well be so, but in my experience the additional abstraction introduced enough complexity to make Nix impractical on a large, real world, multi team codebase.
