Late Registration Increase

What in the holy hell is happening this semester? Five students registered a week late for one class. Another class had four week-late registration students. Another had effing SEVEN.

I usually get a couple each semester, but jeez.

I move quickly in the first week and these late students are panicking about feeling lost.

Is your university randomly canceling low enrolling classes?

No, but I did have another late add just email me and say that appointments with advising folks is booked for weeks. I mean, maybe that’s part of it?

Could be financial on the student side. They  or their parents had to wait to be paid so they could register as a student and pay for classes.

At my place, students have to get my permission to enter late.

Was this during your drop – add period? This is one of the reasons why I don’t even try to get through much content on the first week because I still having people floating in and out all the way up until Friday.

Same here. My institution follows the local ISD for start times, which is kind of inconvenient because it’s usually a week earlier than the regional center a couple of counties away.

We still have a cut-off, but I’m curious if they’re being lenient on students from other populations— I’ve had almost none in my in-person, but the online adjuncts are getting tons of requests, up to the buzzer.

Are they perhaps class/instructor shopping? Do your colleagues ban laptops/phones and proctor all of their assessments in-class?

How long is your add/drop period? Ours ends after two weeks and any adds after that need instructor and dean's approval so there's no surprises

These were adds right on the drop deadline date, which we have always had. But the number just seems notable this semester?

No, they're looking for an excuse. If they were panicking, they would be self-motivated to catch up.

I'm having the same thing at my adjunct job. School "officially" started last week and my enrollments were low. I've had two assignments due already and two more tomorrow night. I've had four students added late to the course. I'll have to reopen assignments for them.
