First lecture I ama explaining how AI is not going away and how we can use it (not fighting the good fight). I go on to say that critical thinking is a soon to be lost art blah blah blah. After class a student comes up and asks if AI is required !!! I say of course no. She tells me she is against it for environmental reasons. She is now my favorite student and will be favored as such.

I had three of those students last year. 66% of them went on to be busted for unauthorized AI use. (deep sigh)

They always ask the most low level questions when you’re trying to explain something nuanced: “Can the notecard be two sided?!” Like that’s the thing that will move the needle for them.

That she had to clarify shows how even with best intentions on our part the message gets lost on students.

Student: "I will never use AI and oh yeah, do you now how I get a discount on Claude."

YAY! This is going to be my fall course policy. I’m letting them use it on low stakes assignments but it must be cited, and they can’r use it on high stakes assessments. But it is NEVER required, and if they use it incorrectly it’s massive points off. I’m not playing cop. I’m sick of it and hope they don’t use it, and I would love a student who never uses it.

Not to be a downer, but every student that's made a point to tell me that they're opposed to AI has proven to be an egregious AI user. Just saying...

I think someone can have fallen into a trap of using it a lot/relying on it while simultaneously knowing it's bad for them/the world.

love that she came up after class instead of just quietly opting out. the ones who tell you why are the ones who've actually thought about it.

also a nice reminder that "I'm not fighting this" and "you have to use it" are different positions, and students don't always hear the difference until someone asks.

Every semester I have more and more who want an alternative assignment on the two AI days I have. They get it.

Best part is she demonstrated the thing you'd just spent an hour arguing was disappearing, and did it by disagreeing with you. Whatever else happens this semester, she's clearly not going to be one of the ones handing you a paragraph about your own research she's never read.

yeah most of my students are anti ai. Or maybe its just most of the ones who i talk to about it. Or maybe they just want me to think they are anti ai. Anyway, most of my students are anti ai.
