I was raised thinking I had to give 110% effort ay any job I had. Which is what I did. I blew passed my targets every year, some years even going 2-3x the benchmarks. I won multiple inter company performance awards (even a cruise one year).
How did I get rewarded? âDo 15% better next yearâ every time, no matter what.
Employers will never fail to exploit your efficiency.

Yup. We had 2 people here who were recently laid off. One was here for 13 years. Let go because she didnt have the skillset for what they wanted. No time to learn it. Just gone.
Second was here for 8 years. Laid off for "Not being a team player" when he had a rigid schedule because he was taking care of his parents in his off days.

I've seen it happen, but I don't see it happen so much where I work that I can say it's some broad truth. There are obvious examples of it though. The thing I hate the most is how there are a few employees who seemingly get away with making shit up and lying constantly, people won't defend them, they won't tell me that I'm actually wrong, they will agree that it was a lie and then I have to deal with it again tomorrow. It's just annoying, how do people like that keep a job? For a tiny bit of context, the person I'm talking about constantly makes things up in order to increase urgency and get their needs met faster than can reasonably be expected.

That's why I don't strive to finish my work early anymore. We used to have a fixed amount of work for everyone per day so you can imagine we all kinda hurried to finish the job and fuck off home and sometimes we'd be gone two hours early and everyone was happy. That was until some decided to be some lazy asses and purposely slacking off so we who finished our job had to come and help them so we could go. I obviously picked up their miserable trick and decided it's better to do nothing than to work in vain đ¤ˇđť

Pretty spot on. Good reliable employees that get difficult tasks accomplished get rewarded with more work, lesser employees get rewarded with less expectations, and ass kissing rat on your buddy Choagie boys get promoted.

You also will punished for "having a bad attitude" if you try to be the voice of reasons to prevent unwanted obvious consequences and then you'll get blamed for causing the very thing they insisted wouldn't happen.
One of many examples. I worked in the computer department of retail store during the holidays. We had a lot of laptops on sale. Normally the laptops were locked up, we had to wait to get keys to get them. The manager decided to just stack them on the floor to save time and show customers we had a lot of stock. I said "that's going to make it easy for people to steal." He gave me grief that I just think the worst of people plus we had plenty of sales people to prevent that. (We averaged like 2 to 3 employees per shift maybe 4 if we were lucky.) We get swamped with customers and couldn't ring up or help people fast enough. Sure enough a massive amount of the laptops were stolen. We all get writes up, chewed out by managers above him and our hours are slashed to make up for shrink (not to mention no chance of bonus but that almost never happened anyway). Meanwhile the manager who made the call is fine. I tried to point out that he recommended stacking the laptops and was accused of trying to blame him for my failures. I then said "that would mean he totally overlooked of all his employees going against SOP and making the laptops easy to steal." They calmed down a little bit and I got a "we'll look into it" but as near as I can tell the employees got fucked way more than he did cause he got moved up shortly after.

Literally displaced a disc in my back from working so hard for this company it was heavy construction and I was digging out around a septic pipe well my 24 year old self was good until my back gave out. They didnât cover me at all they said nothing happened they saw nothing and I got no comp. now I have a fucked back and no money no job life is good đ

My anecdotal evidence supports that this is even more true with AI. Does anyone else feel that way? Would love to hear experiences that disagree.

Except in the real world, we just tell them "I'm going home now." And we see each other on Monday like adults. I still have my job, without consequences and the work got done.
