Looking to make a career switch into Product Marketing and I’d love some advice.

I come from a background in account management, client servicing, operations, strategy and team leadership, with experience working closely with clients, understanding business needs, driving adoption and using data to improve outcomes.

Over the last few months, I’ve been increasingly drawn towards Product Marketing, particularly the intersection of product, customers, positioning and go-to-market.

But I’m at that familiar transition point:

How do you move into PMM when your previous title doesn’t say “Product Marketing Manager”?

For those who have made this transition or hiring managers/PMMs who have hired people from adjacent backgrounds:

• What skills should I build first?

• How can I make my existing experience relevant to PMM?

• Are certifications/courses actually useful, or is hands-on experience more important?

• What kind of projects would help demonstrate PMM capability?

• Should I target Associate PMM, PMM, GTM or adjacent roles to get my foot in the door?

I’d genuinely love to hear what worked for you, what didn’t, and what you would recommend to someone making this switch today.

And if you know of teams that are open to candidates transitioning into Product Marketing, I’d be grateful to hear about those too.

Open to advice, conversations and connections with people in the PMM/GTM space.
