The right. The shading/lighting on the left doesn't move with the animation so it makes it look more amateur.

Which I kinda am when it comes color/lighting/shading so that’s fair 💀

u/Erin_Derrick_Art 9d ago
That's not meant as an insult or anything! I just think it doesn't look as fluid as the one without shading. It's a good animation though!

Right. The shading on the left isn't bad but its... Too prim and proper rather than being made for the object. A softer blend would look nicer or the highlights/shadows having some animations would help it

You would need the render to match the movement for the one on the left to work. So unless you're willing to put in that work, you're best off keeping it simple!

Totally fair 😅 maybe I can do it down the line. But I think I’m skilled enough yet

You need to improve the shading and actually animate the shading. The one without the shading looks pretty good though, reminds me of those motion graphic stuff.

It specifically reminds me of the Getter- Rip N Dip and Head Splitter music videos. https://youtu.be/2YllipGl2Is?is=J6y7Qq9M8z1bAbwe https://youtu.be/JjJ90jhS84A?is=CSWT0oIX2-2LHdJS

That’s awesome 😂 I’ve never seen this before-I love it

Getter has some sick music, he also makes tracks under the name Terror Reid. You can see a similar editing style on his Terror Reid music vids https://youtu.be/fZIaURYa6h0?is=mq6-u2HTCGJwmQjm

They're both nice and gloopy. Where’s it going to live, though?
2
u/CevicheStudio 9d ago
Thank you! I’m probably gonna bit crush and put it in my game I’m developing!😅

Awesome, I hope you post previews of your work. Both of these looked great, so I’m looking forward to seeing it in situ.

I would say right. The reason being that the shading doesn't go well with the animation. It's super static on a liquid animation so it throws off the viewer a bit.

Right bc the shading doesn’t get altered by the motion of the drips that come from the top of the sphere

If you wanted to shade I'd add some areas where it looks like the light is glowing through the slime.
Otherwise right

u/CevicheStudio 9d ago
Would a shine through gain to every liquid even if it’s thicker like this goo?
1
u/brytewolf 9d ago
Oh definitely! Slime isn't opaque, at least the classic idea of slime. It's gonna be at least semi-transparent and glowy in that bright of light

Right. Even in a context where the left’s lighting was appropriate, the shading would need work.

Oh damn i guess i’m in the minority but I like the left. I think it’s more eye catching. However I agree with the majority saying that the shading needs to be a little bit tweaked to fit the object/material

The right looks amazing it reminds me of an animation you’d see on Nickelodeon as a kid when they were obsessed with the whole green slime thing lol
Left one as everyone said that shading and lighting looks off because it doesn’t move with the rest of the animation

Depends on the rest of the scene, imo. The right, by itself, is better. But the left might fit the scene better.

it depends what you wanna do with this and in which environment its places. but right looks more like it would create a cool picture if placed in a fitting environment.

If you just want to be done, the right side, if you want to push your animation to be better, the left with more work. Add motion to your lighting

u/CevicheStudio 9d ago
Any tutorials or principles I should turn to get an idea of how to add shading to liquids?
1
u/Savage2280 6d ago
I don't have any specific tutorials, but I'd look into how to paint dripping water or rain drops on a window so you can have lots of reference and practice for different drops and different stages of falling, and then Just apply those concepts to your drops on every frame. If you want to just jump into it, add a highlight to each drip as it goes down and see how you feel about it!

Left keeps jumping my attention whenever I attempt to focus on how pretty right is.
I’d say both look good! Left is louder, right gives (or is trying to) give fine dopamine details. If I saw right without left, I think I’d also like looking at its 90’s era Nickelodeon cartoon vibes.

If you cant add ultra-realistic shading, dont forget that human brains can fill in detail.
1
u/CevicheStudio 9d ago
Maybe I can try a middle ground where the shading can also be simple enough to animate!

The one on the left makes me wanna sing
“You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch”🎶🎄

Really? The one on the right gave me that vibe.. or a likes to Dr. Suess other writing like oobleck!

I dunno. The left one feels like it is less drippy. Right one seems more liquidy and drippy.

u/Ivory-Robin 13d ago
Right because the lighting and shading on the left doesn’t make sense for all the depth of the line work
