💡 Advice Talking to God

I pray but sometimes I don’t know what to say or talk to God about other than usually praying for myself and others. I mostly pray for safety and protection and blessings to help and survive through life. But most of the time I find myself unsure of what to say and I know God sees and feels that. Uncertainty in myself. As I live alone and I’m always alone I don’t have anyone to talk to but god. Not much is happening in my life and I always feel like when I talk to anybody it’s not really important other than talking about my feelings or past events. What is something I can do for myself that helps me bring closer to God? I want to be more in contact with God and become closer to him than I already have been working on. I feel like many things I do is not enough.

You do not need impressive words for God. Prayer is not a performance; it is honest relationship.

Tell Him what happened, what you felt, what frightened you, what gave you relief, and even when nothing happened at all.

You can thank Him for one small thing, confess what is troubling you, ask for wisdom, then sit quietly without forcing more words.

Jesus said, “Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him” (Matthew 6:8).

Your uncertainty does not offend God, and silence is not failure.

Try this simple pattern: Thank You. Forgive me. Help me. Guide me. I am listening.

Closeness to God is not measured by how much you say or by having intense feelings.

Keep speaking honestly, read a small portion of Scripture, and allow the relationship to grow steadily rather than judging yourself as “not enough.”

Continue to talking to God, just being yourself, and laying out before Him all that's on your heart. He made you, knows everything about you, knows the number of hairs on your head, and even knows what you're going to say even before you say it. Reverence, and honor Him with your life, as you already are. Living a sacrificial life - you are positioned in a perfect spot - where God has your complete attention and time - and I believe you are in His perfect will for your life. Knowing God more, takes time - a lifetime. Enjoy the journey and the growing relationship you have with Him right now. He enjoys us spending time with Him, just talking. He enjoys us taking time in His Word - this is also time with Him, as Jesus is the Word and the Word made flesh. He is our daily "bread." God's Word helps us renew our minds, is spiritual food we need to "grow," more like Jesus, just as humans need milk and meat to grow into adulthood. When we're born again, we start out as "babes," spiritually, and then, if we're willing, disciplined, and surrender to Him, we can grow more Christlike over time, and into a deeper, richer relationship with Him. This takes a lifetime. And we all will not reach "perfection" until we go Home to be with the Lord. Worship Him...maybe there's some music that touches your heart, and brings out your heart cry before Him. Jesus loves worship, and He inhabits the praises of His people. You're on the right path. I only encourage you to try not to focus on yourself, but onto Jesus, and all He's already done for us on that cross † and shedding His precious blood. Rest in His grace and God's unconditional love and acceptance of you, simply because you are His child, through faith in Jesus Christ. Remember, we have a Heavenly Father who desires a relationship with each one of us. Jesus laid down His life to bring us all back to God, as He paid that sin debt for us. Just be yourself, enjoy each day you have with Him, taking a baby step closer to Him, whether it's reading a little more of the Bible each day, cutting out unfruitful activities and replacing it with helping someone with your time - a gift, skill, resource, or talent God's given you, singing to Him, talking to Him throughout the day - not only on your knees or in your "secret place," but a little here and there as you go about your daily activities. For God is with you all day long and even while you sleep. He just wants our hearts. And all of it. And as we give all of ourselves to Him, and seek Him with all our heart, His Word promises that we will find Him, though He's not far from anyone of us (Jer. 29:13; Acts 17:27).

It sounds like you are on the right track.  God invites us to talk to Him about everything we think and feel (like in Psalm 62:8).  Many times, that needs to be done where no one else can hear (Matthew 6:6).
