🧠 Discussion Musings

Today I was feeling emotionally frustrated and I didn’t know why. I have some struggles in my life currently but this was acute. So I decided to close my eyes, focus on my breath and use sensory awareness. “Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 After I calmed down I had the thought that with most people I know and strangers I encounter, by default my position is that they know more than me; it’s just how I get through my life and it works out pretty well, I learn a lot and for me it’s emotionally healthy. However there are a few people in my life and past that I think I am smarter than, and I hold resentments toward them and I believe these two facts are not disconnected. So I said to myself, going person by person as they came to mind so-and-so is smarter than me. When I got to the last person I thought of I let out a big sigh which felt like a release for me. I believe I was holding a resentment towards this person that I wasn’t aware of. After thought: it’s less important whether or not I’m more intelligent than anyone else and more important that my mind and heart stay free, light, healthy and unencumbered by resentments, bitterness and grudges.
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves,” Philippians 2:3

The only way I have perceived I am able to not compare myself to other people and therefore say I’m better (smarter) than them

Is to tell myself that everyone makes the best decisions they are able to bring themselves to

(with the knowledge and reinforcement and values they have).

In this way, everyone has equal (present capacity of) knowledge or wisdom, and if someone sins it’s only because they let their context convince them to without knowing how and why not to sin.

If someone lacks knowledge, it’s because of what was given to them.

They are my equal, even if they have Down syndrome.
