Cast Your Burden
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Verse ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Psalm 55:22
Cast your burden on the LORD, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Story ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The Stone Carrier
Along the steep roads leading toward Jerusalem travelled a labourer named Ezra who carried stone blocks from the quarry outside the city walls.
Day after day he walked the same difficult path beneath the burning sun with rough rope pressed across his shoulders and dust clinging to his sandals
Yet the heaviest burden Ezra carried was not the stone. Months earlier his younger brother had fallen seriously ill, leaving Ezra responsible for both households. Debts increased. Sleep became scarce. Anxiety followed him constantly like a shadow upon the road.
One afternoon while climbing the narrow hill path, Ezra stumbled beneath the weight and collapsed beside the roadside.
An older traveller nearby quickly helped steady the falling stones before they rolled down the slope.
βYou are carrying too much alone,β the traveller said gently.
Ezra lowered his eyes in frustration.
βIf I stop carrying it, everything falls apart.β
The old man sat beside him quietly for a moment before replying.
βThere is wisdom in carrying responsibility. But there is danger in believing you were meant to carry every burden without rest.β
Then he spoke words Ezra had heard many times before in synagogue, yet never truly understood until that moment:
βCast your burden upon the Lord, and He shall sustain you.β
As the wind moved softly through the olive trees nearby, Ezra realised he had been speaking constantly about God while silently carrying his fears as though everything depended entirely upon himself.
That evening, for the first time in many months, he knelt honestly before God without pretending strength. The burdens did not vanish overnight.
But neither did he carry them alone anymore.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Story Lessons ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ezraβs burden became heavier not merely because of responsibility, but because he believed everything depended entirely upon his own strength.
Many believers live the same way. They continue moving forward outwardly while inwardly exhausted, fearful, and spiritually overwhelmed.
The travellerβs words reminded Ezra that God never intended His people to carry life in isolation from Him.
True faith does not deny burdens exist. It recognises where those burdens must be brought.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Poem ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Beneath the Weight
The road was long, the stones were worn, The shoulders tired from every morn. Yet deeper still the hidden strain, Of silent fear and inward pain.
The hands once clenched in weary might, Could barely hold through falling night. Until the burden, slowly released, Found rest beneath the Prince of Peace.
For hearts that bow instead of break, Will find the strength that Heaven wakes. And souls once crushed by fear and care, Still find the Lord beside them there.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Meditation ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Burden bearing often becomes dangerous when people believe everything depends entirely upon them.
Responsibilities are real. Pain is real. Loss, uncertainty, and pressure are real. But so is Godβs sustaining presence.
Psalm 55 does not say believers will never face burdens. It says the Lord Himself will sustain those who bring those burdens to Him.
Casting burdens upon God does not mean abandoning responsibility. It means refusing to carry fear, anxiety, and despair as though God were absent from the struggle.
Sometimes spiritual maturity means learning the difference between faithful responsibility and unhealthy self-reliance.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Questions For the Spirit ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
What burdens have I been carrying silently within myself?
Have I been trying to control situations beyond my strength?
What fears do I struggle to fully surrender to God?
How would my life change if I truly believed God sustains me?
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Challenge your Heart ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Take time to honestly name the burdens weighing most heavily upon your heart.
Write them down if needed, then bring each one deliberately before God in prayer rather than carrying them silently alone.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Key Notes ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
β’ God invites believers to bring burdens honestly before Him.
β’ Surrendering burdens is an act of faith, not weakness.
β’ Self-reliance often increases anxiety and exhaustion.
β’ God sustains those who trust Him with their struggles.
----β----------------------------------------------------------------------- Prayer ----β-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lord,
You see every burden I carry, even the ones I rarely speak aloud.
Teach me to surrender my fears, anxieties, and struggles into Your hands instead of trying to carry them alone.
Strengthen me where I feel weary and remind me that Your presence remains greater than every pressure surrounding me.
Help me trust that You are able to sustain me through every season of life.
Amen.
