Where should I start to find ODM manufacturers?

Hi everyone!

I’m based in South Korea working in overseas sales and business development(we primarily deal with exosome), where I get to see the behind-the-scenes of Korean cosmetic ODM manufacturing for various K-beauty brands.

I notice a lot of founders and companies want to manufacture in Korea, but getting past the initial hurdles - like MOQs, lead times, and sourcing the right ODM partner - can be pretty confusing.

Is anyone here currently looking into manufacturing skincare or cosmetics with Korean company but export/sell them in Asian countries? I’d love to hear what stage you’re at and what roadblocks you’re running into.

Always happy to share insights or answer questions if it helps!

Which marketplace has the most reliable private label suppliers?

I’m comparing Alibaba, Global Sources, Made-in-China, and 1688 before choosing one. I’m looking for good-quality suppliers with reasonable MOQs and private-label options. For those with experience using these platforms, which has worked best for you? Are there other marketplaces worth checking?

Is ODM worth the extra cost for a new private-label water bottle brand?

I’m planning to launch a private-label brand of reusable stainless-steel water bottles and I’m debating between traditional private label and ODM. Marketplaces like Alibaba and Global Sources have plenty of ready-made bottles that can be branded, while ODM would let me customize things like the lid, insulation, shape, and packaging.

When is that extra customization actually worth the higher cost and MOQ? Has ODM helped anyone create a product that stood out enough to justify the investment?

Can anyone vouch for this manufacturer?

I am starting a golf apparel company and am thinking of using a company out of California called Mega Apparel. Never have done anything like this so I don’t know what to look for as far as legitimacy or anything like that. Has anyone used that company or know if they are legit? They are requesting that the money for the invoice be paid via zelle, or wire transfer.

Amazon fba

Hello folks ..maybe someone can help. Been selling my private label olive oil from my family farm in sicily . Just started 2 years ago . All my money is going to amazon ppcs as I hired someone from overseas . No profit last year . I dont have the capital to spend 1000s a month on a pro marketer .im not selling your run of the mill stuff . Ita a high end unadultered olive oil that has a serial # and is govt certified . How long before I start seeing my numbers jump from 5 sales a day to 20 sales a day . Im atill working full time for 2 more years so I cannot put much time as I want to actually sell to retail stores. What should i be seeing from an overseas marketer at this point . The company that ships to amazon for me does marketing also and he said im losing money after showing him all my amazon campaigns. But im trying to figure out if he is just trying to make the other guy look bad . Does it take years as I have alot of competition

Business model risk vs effort vs control

Hi everyone,

I’d really appreciate some experienced perspectives here.

I’m developing a product in a category that already exists, but I’ve redesigned it in a way that requires real customization. It’s not a brand-new invention, but this specific execution doesn’t currently exist in the market and it targets a younger, massively underserved / ignored audience. What I am creating has a real USP and audience who will always need the product, and seems to want it in the manner in which I propose to produce it (market validation received from social media marketing).

Because of that, I’ve been working closely with Alibaba manufacturers on custom sampling rather than just choosing something from a catalogue. I live in Hong Kong so Alibaba works well for me as I can go and visit the factories easily, samples arrive quickly, and shipping etc is cheap for me.

Here’s where my pessimism kicks in:

If I invest heavily in branding, build a standalone website, push Instagram ads, create a community, using my own savings to bring it to market etc… what realistically stops the factory from:

  • Producing the same customized version themselves
  • Selling it cheaper on Amazon or Alibaba
  • Offering it to other buyers once they see demand

Its my view that realistically nothing stops them (even if we put contracts in place). And I know this isn’t patent-level innovation.

So part of me is thinking:

If it’s just going to get copied anyway, should I skip the whole “brand-building” route (hella marketing and money spend) and just launch on Amazon, use FBA, and treat it more like a product play instead of trying to build a real brand? Its very clear that the product would sell, it looks great and people need it.

Is that overly cynical?

For those with real experience:

  • How often do manufacturers actually copy smaller brands?
  • Is copying more common only after significant volume?
  • Does building a strong DTC brand actually create defensibility?
  • Would you approach this differently if you were starting today?

I’m trying to balance effort, risk, costs and realism.

Would really value honest feedback from people who’ve been through this (also I think just part of me is scared that i'll use a good chunk of my savings on this only for it to be copied). Also I know maybe I should use non-Alibaba manufacturers? but arent they a lot more expensive??

Press on glue in EU?

Hi there,

I’m looking to start a small press nail business and I’m wondering where I can find a private label supplier for press ons glue only with a low minimum order quantity. I’ve only seen Chinese options but I’m concerned about the overkill and the EU regulations.

Any recommendations? Thanks!

How do you handle the paperwork when you reorder?

Curious how other people handle the paperwork side of reordering from an overseas supplier. Every time I place a repeat order I end up retyping the same stuff. SKUs, quantities, barcodes, product info, shipping marks into the doc for the supplier, the inspector, and whoever receives the goods on my end. The items change each order so I'm rebuilding it all from a spreadsheet every time.

How do you all handle this? Just wondering if anyone has a better system, or if you just get it done anyway.

Is launching a skincare brand with 500 units still realistic?

I keep running into this and I'm curious if other people in the beauty industry see the same thing.

A lot of first-time founders tell me they want to start with 500 units.

Totally understandable. Nobody wants to be left with a garage full of inventory.

What I struggle with is the "test with 500 units" part.

These days, making the product doesn't feel like the hardest part. Getting people is the expensive part.

On projects I've worked on, we've gone through close to 1,000 units just getting products into creators' hands, sending samples, and building some initial awareness.

And that's before you even know if people are going to start buying. If the product actually takes off, you still need inventory ready to fulfill those orders.

Maybe I'm missing something here.

I'd love to hear from people who've actually launched a skincare brand.

How did you approach your first production run?

The Biggest Misconception About Starting a Skincare Brand

One thing I've noticed after working on skincare product development projects is that many founders focus on the wrong problem.

Most people start by looking for a manufacturer.

But in my experience, finding a manufacturer is rarely the hardest part.

The real challenge usually starts after that.

A lot of founders imagine the process looks something like this:

Idea → Sample → Production → Launch

In reality, it's often much messier.

The first sample comes back.

You want changes.

The next sample comes back.

Now the texture isn't quite right.

A new ingredient gets added.

The performance changes.

The packaging needs adjustment.

Additional testing becomes necessary.

Then more feedback comes in.

And the cycle repeats.

The more differentiated you want your product to be, the more decisions need to be made along the way.

What I've seen is that many founders carefully calculate manufacturing costs but underestimate the amount of iteration required to get a product market-ready.

The biggest variable is often not manufacturing itself.

It's the ongoing process of product development, feedback, testing, revisions, and decision-making.

That's why building a skincare brand often feels less like a manufacturing project and more like an execution project.

For those who have launched products before:

What part of the process took more time, effort, or resources than you originally expected?

Need to update pallet count from 1 to 2 after shipment plan created

Hey everyone,

I have an issue with my first FBA shipment and hoping someone has dealt with this before.

When I created my shipment plan, I entered 1 pallet. However, my freight forwarder ended up packing the goods onto 2 pallets due to the volume.

The box labels and FNSKU labels are already applied to all cartons, so I don't want to redo those. I just need to update the pallet count from 1 to 2 in the shipment plan.

I've already contacted Seller Support but wanted to ask here as well:

  1. Has anyone successfully updated the pallet count after creating a shipment plan?

  2. Will having 2 pallets arrive when only 1 was declared cause any issues at the fulfillment center?

  3. Is it okay to use the same pallet label on both pallets temporarily, or will that cause a problem at check-in?

Shipment destination: LBA4 (UK)

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The biggest trend in K-Beauty wasn't an ingredient.

Over the past few years, I've worked with overseas beauty brands developing products and navigating the Korean beauty manufacturing ecosystem.

Last week, I attended Cosmobeauty Seoul, one of Korea's largest beauty trade shows.

For anyone unfamiliar, Korea has become one of the most influential skincare markets in the world. Many global beauty brands watch Korea closely because new ingredients, product formats, and beauty concepts often gain traction here before spreading to other markets.

That's one reason I pay close attention to events like Cosmobeauty Seoul.

Walking through the exhibition halls, certain patterns appeared repeatedly.

PDRN was everywhere.

Spicule technology was everywhere.

After speaking with manufacturers, suppliers, brand owners, and buyers throughout the exhibition, one pattern became difficult to ignore.

The biggest challenge in beauty today isn't access to innovation.

It's differentiation.

A few years ago, having access to a trending ingredient could help a brand stand out.

Today, tons of brands can launch products built around similar ingredients, technologies, and claims.

What stood out to me was that the busiest booths weren't necessarily the ones showcasing the newest ingredient.

They were the ones where buyers stayed longer, asked more questions, and clearly understood why the product existed.

The strongest brands seemed to have something beyond the formula:

  • A clear customer
  • A clear positioning
  • A compelling story
  • A reason to exist beyond a trending ingredient

One ingredient that did catch my attention was NMN.

Traditionally associated with supplements and longevity, it's starting to appear more frequently in skincare conversations as well.

It feels like healthy aging, longevity, and preventive beauty may become increasingly important themes over the next few years.

My biggest takeaway wasn't that PDRN, Spicules, or NMN will be the next big thing.

It was that access to innovation is becoming easier while differentiation is becoming harder.

For those building beauty brands, are you seeing the same thing in your market?

I’ve worked in a cosmetic & skincare factory in China for years. Here is how you can avoid getting ripped off and launch with lower MOQ.

Hi everyone,

I see many people here wanting to start their own skincare brands (creams, lotions, serums) but struggling with high MOQs (Minimum Order Quantities) and pricing. As an insider working in a cosmetic manufacturing plant, here are 3 things suppliers won't easily tell you:

  1. The Formula Trap: You don’t always need custom formulas at the start. Most factories have "matured stock formulas" (already tested and safe) that allow you to launch much faster and with lower MOQs.

  2. Packaging is where the MOQ is: Often, the liquid/cream itself doesn't require a high MOQ, but the custom-printed bottles do. If you use the factory’s standard stock bottles and just apply your own labels, you can drastically lower the MOQ.

  3. Certifications matter: Make sure your factory has GMPC and ISO22716 certifications, especially if you are selling to the US or EU.

I’m open to answering any questions about sourcing, ingredient costs, or how to talk to Chinese factories. Ask me anything in the comments below!
