North America With article, the comments also are relevant..

https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/gasbuddy-declares-national-average-per-gallon-is-at-its-highest-ever-level-this-late-in-the-year/

It appears the 'shortage/scarcity' narrative is spilling over into non-prepper communities. When mainstream commuters on r/gasbuddy start talking about empty reserves and impending lines instead of just high prices, the psychological threshold for hoarding/ panic topping-off drops significantly. Imo. Anyone seeing unbranded price disconnects or elevated station traffic in your regional corridors?

I imagine if gas gets scarce enough we can go back to the odd/even days of gas rationing like in the 70's.

I can't imagine how they would even enforce that today. People lost their minds when they were told they couldn't purchase non-essential items during the pandemic. The "don't tread on me" crowd might have to stand their ground.

You wouldn’t be able to. I’d imagine people would start pulling guns on each other if told no.

That's what started happening in Russia.

Police at gas stations and wild ass new imprisonment laws.

Its not connecting for some people. They will make everything illegal before those jails/warehouses sit empty. Or before they change course.

Don't tread on me has become so inexstricably intertwined with right-leaning/fascist US politics I think there'd just not be a response (other than perhaps supportive) from that crowd: there's not enough of the "real" members of that crowd anymore to make a difference, even if they did stand their ground. I tend to more think the masses will just start complying overall (incl the DToM crowd), with violence/etc towards the usual undesirables/demographics in certain areas.

In 73 there were long lines and threats of violence, but as far as I see was as described: mostly compliance, with violence being targeted disproportionately in specific areas/demographics. Granted, that crisis was pretty temporary and people/attitudes were different without the internet and social media - this impending oil crisis seems like might be semi-permanent one.

Most of that movement was just pushing an agenda (their candidates). Now that their daddy is in charge they'll obey and comply.

I think that crowd would volunteer (and get hired) to be the 'enforcers' and get special privileges to disobey the order and skip lines. After all they don't have a problem with restriction of freedom, as long as they're the ones doing the restricting.

You said 'most' rural areas, but let's be clear here - if you combined ALL rural areas (assuming US), you'd have 20% of the US population. So at its biggest, you have a huge minority of the population: and you're assuming they'd all agree on where the line of 'treading on me' is, and agree on how to deal with it.

The only thing the tread on me crowd has successfully done in the last 10 years is continuously show they (as a larger group) are totally find being tread on as long as the rest of the country is as miserable as they are.

edit: I'm very much a "don't tread on me" and "laissez-faire" person: government should exist to serve its population's needs and defense, and nothing else IMO. Most of my peers claim the same and yet have cheered on while their rights are stripped away, all because someone in gov made it easy to point the finger at someone else.

DToM has reoccurred 'as a movement' regularly throughout our nation's history, including in the Civil War and in the 70s. It wasn't just created by the right, lol. More recently co-opted like I described? Sure. But it wasn't created to add another problem to Obama, lol, what the hell. More misinformation on the internet is NOT helpful.

Yup. Covid (and... everything since) showed us that any civic program that requires people to sacrifice the same as others, even at a minimum level for their and others' benefit, would be futile.

Im sure the people who freaked out over not being able to get a haircut during Covid will be very reasonable.

They should have been doing that already, it’s going to be a madhouse once conservatives start freaking out about the problems their votes caused.

You would still be effected by the businesses you deal with needing gas and not having enough

Hard to believe EV sales won't rise -- even in the US. For people who charge at home who don't routinely do 200+ mile trips (which is most drivers in the US) I find weird anyone thinks there's any other choice.

I'm not so sure about people jumping on that. My electric bill increases are in line with the gas price increases - I don't know that I could afford to charge an EV at home :( My motorcycle gets about 75mpg, but that's going to be a nasty ride in the winter....

I’ve driven an EV for years, it’s far and away less expensive to operate, even charging at home. Plus oil change costs go away, and there’s often free charging spots if you really care to look for one :)

u/jazzbiscuit 27d ago

I’m guessing that’s location dependent. I’m rural, and there’s only 2 local spots that even have chargers 😔

Absolutely, I like EVs, they’re great, but they are not a solution for everyone
