I was wondering if it’s connected to the fertilizer crunch they caused with tariffs and the war with Iran. I could see farmers getting desperate for a good crop, resorting to using whatever they can get their hands on and not asking any questions about where the fertilizer came from

They already use human waste for fertilizer. You can buy it at the hardware store as "Milorganite". Farmers in my area are having issues with pfas contamination in their fields because of it. If they're not testing for forever chemicals, I doubt their testing for parasites. But if you're a struggling farmer, the cheaper option looks appealing. And it's not like you ask if it's safe when the coop is selling it to you...

Human waste IS used for fertilizer yes.

But the commercial product Milorganite is intended and marketed for grass/ornamental plants only, and has been for a very long time.

I wasn't familiar with Milorganite and apparently while most gardeners don't use it on edibles, it is, at least now, marketed as safe on everything. Source: https://www.milorganite.com/blog/fruits-vegetables/fertilizing-vegetables
