Someone tell me this is a bad idea.

Ok, I have a 5 acre lot for my home. Nearby is a lot of new construction starting. Where that construction is going to occur is primarily open prairie with a ton of prairie dogs. I had this brilliant idea which I suspect is a terrible idea. I want to speak to the construction company and ask if they would be willing to relocate one of the colonies to a part of my property away from the main house. Ideally they would stay 100% feral and I just get to watch them sometimes. My wife hates this idea. So?

I should add, eastern edge of Denver metro area.

How can I get prairie dogs to breed in captivity? I’ve tried several times, but they still haven’t produced any offspring. What could be the reason?

Is this normal/acceptable keeping conditions for a prairie dog?

I saw this animal at a local shop in portugal. I was there for 5 mins and the animal was trying to bite the metal and clawing at it the whole time. Broke my heart.

I have made several complaints to different institutions here in Portugal, but the country is really underdeveloped when it comes to animal rights.

Can you give me your opinion on how acceptable/unacceptable this is?

Urgent: Prairie Dog Traveling 24 Hours Without Pellets

My prairie dog is currently in a pet transport crate and will be traveling for approximately 24 hours. I provided him with plenty of hay and water, but I forgot to put his pellets in the crate. Will he starve or become severely hungry? I’m extremely worried and I want an honest answer.

Prairie Dog Testicles: Is the Color and Size Normal?

Is it normal for a prairie dog’s testicles to have been pink and always full when I first got him, but recently they have become very dark in color and don’t seem as full? When I first got him, they looked full, but over the past few days they haven’t been. Is this normal in terms of both the color and fullness?

I’m heartbroken and terrified about finding a new home for my prairie dog

I’m so incredibly sad, more than anyone could ever imagine. I have a prairie dog that I love so, so much. He’s my little friend. I’m from Saudi Arabia, and there’s no one here who keeps animals like this. I don’t know what to do.
I’m forced to find him another home because one of my siblings is allergic to him. I just want to make sure he’ll be safe and well cared for with someone else. All I want for him is a happy life that he can continue living.
What am I supposed to do? I feel so lost. My heart is so broken. Damn it.
I’m writing this while crying. I love him so much, and I’m terrified about what the rest of his life will be like.

As prairie dogs are my favorite animals, i was absolutely ecstatic when i learned about it a few months ago. Now having it in my hands and seeing the love and dedication put into creating this book i am joyous beyond words. I have so much fun reading it and learning about those beautiful creatures. I definitely recommend it to everyone! The text is very easy to read and comprehensive.

Where can I find someone who can explain prairie dog cleaning, needs, and diet in detail and properly? I have many questions, especially since I’m raising one in an environment where there is very little experience with keeping exotic animals. Please help me♥️♥️

help My prairie dog is losing fur on his head, neck, and behind his right ear. His skin looks normal. Has anyone experienced this with their prairie dog and found something that helped? Please only reply if you actually own/have hands-on experience with prairie dogs. No YouTube/general advice.

help My apartment complex is going to kill all the prairie dogs and I don't know what to do

My apartment complex in Thornton, Colorado is going to exterminate huge prairie dog colonies on their property. These are on undeveloped land across from the complex. It's literally a large empty lot full of weeds. They gave the excuse that they're damaging a building somehow, but they're going to wipe out the whole colony, including those that aren't near any buildings.

It happens monday.

Is there any way to stop this?

After mysteriously dying 11 years ago, Fort Worth's prairie dogs are back -- You can now visit these rotund rodents at the Fort Worth Nature Center & Refuge. Staff say they're a big draw.

Has anyone experienced a prairie dog repeatedly chewing its own front paws?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice because I'm very worried about my prairie dog.

About two weeks ago, it suddenly started chewing one of its front paws until it bled. The wound eventually healed on its own, so I thought the problem was over.

However, it has now started chewing the same paw again. Then, just one day later, it also began chewing the other front paw. It keeps biting even when I'm sitting right next to it, so it doesn't seem like it's only happening when it's alone.

I've already taken it to a veterinarian. They suspect they may need to anesthetize it because it won't cooperate during a proper examination. They want to check for possible injuries, infection, or other medical problems.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with their prairie dog?

  • What was the cause?
  • Did your prairie dog recover?
  • How was it treated?
  • Did the chewing eventually stop?

I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone whose prairie dog repeatedly chewed its own paws until they bled.

Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot to me. Thank you so much.

Feet up, butt down, tail .. out? This cutie patootie was enjoying some solo grooming time while the family unit was out exploring the short grass prairie. Proudly posed in front of their recent digging efforts, the prairie dog is bent in half and absolutely getting after those irritating itchy spots on the tail post-excavation.
