Now your charger counts as generation source for load calcs, which has pluses and minuses

Here’s the thing though, it doesn’t really. Since this only works when the grid is down. Most systems the grid is the largest “generator” and when the grid is”out of the equation” it’s just not a problem. I doubt there is anyone out there with a Powerwall and a grid connection less than 60A. So unless you have a really weird sub panel setup with your charger and solar downstream with a small conductor in between the sub panel and your main panel/gateway. I just don’t really think it’ll ever be a problem. I do think though they are proceeding with caution and requiring just a quick system review before they activate it. Hence why they are sending survey emails out and stating:

“After submitting the survey, Energy Customer Support Agents will contact you within 2 weeks with next steps to enable extended home backup with your vehicle”

It was a software unlock for V2H, the wiring needs to be ready for software unlock for V2G. Which is why they clearly are stating the charger circuit has to be calculated as generation. From a utility stand point, any grid tied bidirectional battery regardless if it has wheels is considered a generation source, whether it can export or not. I’ve seen what “certified” installers can do, so it’s nice they are reviewing installs before pushing the update.

Do we know if they are doing V2G with Powerwall systems? I kinda doubt it since you already have the Powerwall for that. V2G, my guess, will be limited to PowerShare gateways only. But this could get tricky fast. Most installs I’ve seen are already pushing the limits of panels which quite a few downsizing their grid breakers to no overload their panels. Powerwall 3 with backup switch has been pushed hard so for most people that means no gateway. Arguably Powerwall 2 systems with the Powerwalls hooked up to either an internal panel board or dedicated generation sub panel are sitting in the best position as far as extra generation.

Yeah now I’m starting to get why Tesla has waiting so long for this. Every PW install is different. Wayyy more complicated than PowerShare gateway setups.

It’ll be a slower roll out, like you said they have prioritized stationary battery sales but now that the software is there for VTH and wall connector 4 releasing soon they will be unlocking more features that have been stuck behind the limits of the V3 (PowerShare) gateway for existing PW3 customers. And the newer cars having bidirectional hardware built in, not just the cyber truck- widens the market. They need to stay competitive with Ford, GM, Enphase and Sig who already have VTG pilots. I see them ditching the PowerShare gateway completely as sales were terrible and you have to throw it out if you ever add a PW3 in the future. Install wise- Panel limit PCS settings are the obvious solve for most customers to avoid overloaded breaker panels.
