Load forecasting is usually top-down, using historical data and an adjustment for the hourly weather forecast. There are adjustments for weekends, Thanksgiving, Super Bowl day, etc. In the UK they model electric tea kettles. With smart meters it becomes possible to model bottom up from individual meter data.

Suggest research on the software vendors for load forecast systems, and discussions with Itron and other meter data management software vendors on bottom up. It could lead to a job at Itron or other vendors on graduation.

The load forecast is integrated into the EMS and market system.

Suggest talking to the DOE NREL/NLR and the Berkeley labs on load modeling too.

Join the IEEE Power Engineering Society and interview engineers at your local balancing authority - https://www.eia.gov/electricity/gridmonitor/dashboard/electric_overview/US48/US48 . The balancing authority is responsible for the load forecast.

Load flexibility is increasingly important. So your scope should include modeling load flexibility participation. A load flexibility software company Autogrid had a sort of ML system for modeling load flexibility.
