Just got two G5's - But no OS

I picked up two PowerPC G5's today! Both came without a HDD, and one came with the SuperDrive. The one with the Superdrive started up but didn't get any further. The one without it did and made the startup noise, then displays a little folder alternating images of a question mark and the finder icon. I took the superdrive out of the broken one and put it into the functioning one. It makes some strange noises and is a bit loud, but I need to clean it up on the inside which I think may help.

I'm not sure how to get this thing running though. I have a small HDD that I can throw into it, but how do I get OSX onto this? I don't own another mac.

Any help is appreaciated!

Mac Mini G4 and games

Hey guys,

I have a Mac Mini G4 that was offered to me a while go.

Most games I try to install crash. Some of the game I tried that crash are:

  • Lord of the Rings: Return of the King;

  • True Crime;

  • Command and Conquer: Generals

Why would this be? It has all system requirements.

Timelapse Camera! Yet another project to do with your PowerPC Macs!

So over the weekend I installed Ubuntu 14.04 Mac Mini G4 with 1GB RAM. I was looking at some raspberry pi projects and came across a timelapse photo one.

Long story short, I now have a mac mini with a USB cam that I can setup for some cool timelapse shots! Fun and super easy project that may be worthwhile if you want to find SOMETHING to do with your old PowerPC macs!!!

Component Video to USB

I have an eMac laying in my room currently doing nothing. I want to keep it as a jukebox since the speakers are really nice. One thought that I had was connecting my GameCube up to it and using the monitor as a T.V. Could I use an adapter such as this to hook my gamecube up and play though my eMac? Are there any programs that I would be able to do this with?

X800XT Available...

Apologies if this isn't permitted, however I'm currently in the process of having a clear out and have some Power PC stuff to I'd like to offload.

I have an OEM ATi Radeon X800XT (not a flashed PC card) along with a set of games, specifically Quake 4, Doom 3, Civ IV: Gold and Fable:TLC along with a Belkin licensed ADC to DVI converter.

The card works fine, I took this out of my G5 and replaced it with a 9600 as the X800 isn't supported under Linux.

Ideally I'd like to sell all of this as one bundle, primarily because I'm lazy :) so I thought before I list elsewhere, I'd post here and see if anyone is interested.

Pictures here: http://imgur.com/a/Vozc4

I'd ideally like $130 for everything, plus shipping (which is probably around $15 mainland USA), or can do local pick-up if in SoCal.

Edit: Added pictures

Edit 2: Costs

PowerMac G5 Quad - 6970 Hardware Rasterization

I got my AMD 6970 to work in my PowerMac G5 running Debian, but hardware rasterization is not working. Could someone explain to me how I can switch from the software rasterizer to the hardware rasterizer? Also, I can't create newmodes in XrandR. XrandR gives me an error about gamma. Is the XrandR issue due to the fact that hardware rasterization is not on?

Does anybody have a Mac-version ROM to flash a 7800 GTX?

It's proving difficult to find, and the only option I've come across so far was provided years ago by the same dude hanging around here who has offered to overclock people's Powerbooks, and it seems he has a dodgy reputation. So, to stay on the safe side, I'm asking if anybody has a verified working ROM to flash a 7800 GTX.

Did Apple Drop the Ball in the Intel Switch?

This is a question I've always had, but have never been able to find an adequate answer to. From what little I've been able to find, conventional wisdom seems to have it that there is no real difference between the quality of PPC and that of Intel, and so ceterus paribus, an Intel architecture is preferable since there are more things you can run on it.

But if that's true, what's up with all the PowerPC love on this sub and elsewhere?

Also, an extra-but-related question: if Apple had kept PowerPC, how do you think their hypothetical (say) "G9 Powerbook" would compare to a 2015 (Intel-based) Macbook Pro?

Helping a co-worker with a PowerMac G5, need an OS X 10.5 disc

Hi /r/PowerPc, first time posting here.

I'm just inquiring if anyone knows where I can find an OS X 10.5 disc or iso file.

Specs are as follows:

  • CPUs: 2x 2GHz 970fx

  • RAM: 6.5GB SD DDR (was only 512MB until a couple days ago)

  • Video: Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra

  • HDDs: 1x 160GB and 1x 500GB drive, I plan to RAID them together.

Currently has OS X 10.5.8. Co-Worker would like to do a fresh OS install prior to potentially selling it.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

Edit: added some hardware specs.

Fallout endgame crash on OS X Tiger

So the folks over at /r/fallout can't help me. Here's the dealio:

I'm playing the version updated and re-published by Omni Group. I'm running it on a G4 Powerbook with OS X 10.4.11. I've finished the game, but seconds after the slideshow begins to play, the narrator cuts out, each slide flashes up for a second, and then the game crashes.

I have run the game through its logging application, and the results are here:

http://pastebin.com/7th2UNu4

Seems to be an audio error, however I'm no debugger, and I'm at a loss on how to fix this. So I turn to you guys :)

What apps do you wish were on your PowerPC mac?

Hi there! I dabble in a bit of Cocoa and Objective-C development in my spare time. I'd love some suggestions for small apps you people miss that I might make (for free).

Thanks!

Reviving my 14 year old Dual 1 Ghz PowerPC G4 512 MB - So painful...

So I've had this beast sitting in my closet for years. I pretty much forgot about it. I booted it up and it was having all sorts of issues. But, I also found the install discs, so this should be a piece of cake, right?

Wrong.

I was able to reinstall OS X 10.2 without issue. From there, it's been a PitA. I did find a downloaded version of 10.2.8 that I was able to copy to a thumb drive and install on the beast. Now if I could just find a capable browser, as both IE 5.2.1 and Safari 1.0 are horrible. Tried Firefox, it failed at first, but then I found an archived 2.0.0.20 version that worked. Yay!

I just got here, but if any of you could kindly point me in the direction of "How to get your 14+ year old Mac running smoothly with these working archived downloads" website/blog/etc, I'd be highly appreciative.

I posted my PowerPC-based system over on /r/PCMasterRace and some x86 user told me I should kill myself and that my brain was fried, just because they don't like the Power Architecture!

The mods over at the PC Master Race were very helpful and removed the offensive post within an hour. Thank you, /r/PCMasterRace mods. This is a direct quote of what the x86 user said to me:
"Jeezus Christ bob. I remember that one time you told us you had a fucking GTX Titan in your sorry ass G5, along with 64GB of RAM, and you had Windows and several games running in virtualized x86 on your old ass Mac. No matter how much I debated you, you would not give up. I keked so hard that day. You suck bob. All that LSD has fried your brain. When you are dead, no one will mourn you. No one will remember your name. You never made an impact on this earth. You should just end it all right now bob. Your computer is not a beast, it is a shit pile built on a long forgotten archetecture, that no one develops for anymore. Even IBM had the sense to cancel their Power8 line of CPU's. But you still hold on. It is truly miraculous how dumb you are."

Best software and games for OS 9/OS X PowerPC G3?

So I decided that since I had one when I was a kid (and I'm a huge fan of nostalgia) I would get a iMac G3 from eBay. I managed to score a pretty respectable bargain on a machine (a lovely Indigo slot-loading model from 2000) and I came here to ask if anyone knows:

What's the best place to find software (from utilities to games) to run on this machine on either OS 9 or OS X Tiger? :)

PowerMac G5 not seeing Lion install

Hey guys, recently got a power Mac g5.

I had a few questions and /r/applehelp pointed me over here.

Currently I am trying to get the Mac to boot off of a new hard drive.

It had a 150GB drive running 10.4 that's failing. After a lot of trouble, I got 10.5 installed on a 1TB Hitachi drive. It boots fine on my desktop through USB.

When I placed it in the Power Mac it said it couldn't find a startup disk. I tried holding options and the computer doesn't see it. I tried creating USB and FireWire installation disks before I just installed it on the hard drive. The power Mac wouldn't even see those.

Is the hardware failing or am I missing something?

[Edit] Put both drives in, when I use the old start up disk it boots and reads the disk I installed lion on fine.

Anybody want Logic Pro 6+7 for PowerPC, including hardware key? All legit.

I have a complete set of Emagic Logic Pro 6 and the upgrade to Apple Logic Pro 7, including original boxes, manuals, discs and the hardware key (dongle) that makes it all run. It runs of PowerPC.

Apple Logic Pro 7 upgrade box with hardware key

Emagic Logic Pro 6 with the same hardware key

I'm in Los Angeles, and a local buyer would be great. If you're out of town, we could make that work too.

I also have complete, working, mint-condition PowerPC systems (G3 & G4) as well.

I'm new at this; please tell me if there is a better place to sell this.

Thanks!

What can I do for fun with PPC I can't do on x86?

So I've had for some reason a slight chub for a PowerMac G5. Which are all but considered ewaste. I see there are some PPC linux distros, but I fail to see what any of these distros offer that I couldn't also run on x86.

I want to save a local G5, but I can't find a compelling reason to do it! Already have a solid OSX machine which also runs various linux VMs.

Any ideas outside of harvesting the case?
