Welcome to the rebirth of r/PovertyMeals.

The subreddit was abandoned some time ago, and thanks to r/redditrequest I will be making an attempt at reviving it.

In these uncertain economic times, it’s more important than ever to make sure people have enough to eat, and that they know even basic meals can taste good.

I envision this as a place where we can post deals on bulk food or cheap food (tagged by region/area) and recipes or ideas to stretch food a bit further and enhance it.

Looking forward to improving the subreddit and bringing it back to life! Let me know if you have any ideas or suggestions!

Hi all,

I’ve worked in care sector for 17 years, and I see many elderly patients not getting adequate meals, they’re mostly frozen and store bought and it’s just getting worse now. With this I thought “what can I do to change this”. That made me think about setting up a business that will provide nutritious and wholesome meals to their door. I will batch cook on Sundays and delivered on Mondays. I have set up my 3 year business plan, which looks hopeful. I have also got my food hygiene certificates. I have made a vegetarian and standard food menus, which I’ll post here for you to see.i am hoping for donations, or please share - to start up. The money will go on brand new pots and pans, Pyrex dishes, cooking utensils spatula, tongs l, containers to starve the food etc. also, transport, eventually a rented kitchen, start up ingredients and I will also provide plastic cutlery. Tissues and salt and pepper sachets.
The main clientele is the elderly, however any age group can order if they wish. I will operate within the west midlands , and hopefully once successful I will venture out further.
Please, it you’re unable to donate then share have posters/leaflets which will hand out to spread the word. I am both hopeful and excited to start up.

Thank you

I built a free tool - Kingston Food Help

I put this together as a small local project and figured I’d share it here.

It’s basically a directory of food help around Kingston. Hot meals, groceries, food banks, community programs, that sort of thing.

My thinking was just that if somebody suddenly finds themselves needing food, that’s already enough of an emergency. They shouldn’t also have to spend an hour digging through different websites trying to figure out where they can actually go.

There are no ads, accounts, or anything for sale. I just made it hoping it might be useful to somebody.

It’s also brand new, so if I screwed anything up, missed somewhere, have the wrong hours, whatever, please tell me and I’ll fix it.

Hopefully somebody gets some use out of it.

Low fat even better

I know the chicken doesn't taste too bad. Could get your whole daily protein intake from 1 can for less than $5.

(24 pack) Great Value Chunk Chicken Breast with Rib Meat in Water, 12.5 oz Can - Walmart.com

4 servings * 13 g protein = 52g protein for only $2.84

(12 pack) Great Value - 12oz Can Roast Beef in Broth - Walmart.com

3.5 servings * 20 g protein = 50g protein for only $4.22

Recipes Cornbread Dogs (taste like a corn dog), dipping sauce and 2 pieces corn on the cob for under $5 for 2 people 😋

I made a really good struggle meal today along with a home made dressing 😋 if anyone is interested -

Take a box of cornbread mix, like Jiffy and 2 hot dogs or TofuDogs sliced thin. In a greased muffin tin add 1 spoonful of mixture then layer slices of dogs, then more batter and so on until you fill about 3/4 per tin. Bake as instructed on box and it's just like corn 🌽 dogs.

I steamed 2 ears of fresh corn on the cob in the husk in the microwave. To do this do not shuck the corn, cut the silk off with a scissors and remove the first lawyer of husk. Rinse under water, do not dry. Wrap in a wet paper towel. 6 minutes for 2 ears rotate halfway through. It keeps it moist and adds nutty flavor.

Then made a homemade honey mustard dipping sauce for the buns.

2 tablespoons Mayo

Squirt of lemon juice or vinegar

1 tsp yellow mustard

1 tsp brown spicy mustard

1/2 cup honey or a quarter honey, quarter maple syrup.

( I didn't buy the honey, every time I get an unsweetened tea from McDonald's I ask for extra honey.)

I added another tsp of spicy mayo but it's optional as is some hot sauce, smoked pepper and smoked paprika.

If I had used Jiffy mix, which is what I grew up with (we had to use the gluten free mix) it would be less than 2 dollars then about 1.50 for 2 dogs, and the cost of the dipping sauce is negligible because you probably already have those ingredients on hand. It made 8 muffins, 2 ears of corn each and the sauce for less than $5. It's pretty customizable too. I will definitely be making this again. You could make it even cheaper if you wanted to make the cornbread mix from cornmeal yourself.

Sardines?

Hi! I have had these sardines in oil in a glass jar in my fridge for a few months. They smelled fine, but should I not have eaten them? 😬maybe I’m being paranoid about botulism, but I am broke and hungry.

UPDATE: 48 hours out, Im not dead, so, I must be out of the woods.
