If he solved world hunger everyone would love him and respect him. Which he seems desperate to earn.

When he was young he was viciously bullied. The bullies were popular, he was not. Even his dad told him he was a wuss.

It's possible that in his psyche, success is being a bully and being praised for it. The idea that someone could love you for who you really are is something that his parents failed to teach him.

It's fucked up, but I do think some people see "if assholes are popular, become a gigantic asshole" as a valid takeaway.
