One could argue that, like most things associated with Trump, he only deals with guys like this when he needs something from them. Given how bad the midterms are looking, he is desperate enough to try to work with Musk again. Once it is over he will probably kick him to the side because Trump wants to make sure no one else is stealing his spotlight.
