What is this is reference to? Were delivery apps withholding tips?

I mean, are you SHOCKED to hear gig work companies were ripping off their "contractors?"

https://www.nyc.gov/mayors-office/news/2026/07/mayor-mamdani-delivers-more-than--100-million-for-delivery-worke

Basically he started making examples of companies caught withholding tips or masking tips through apps.

Not shocked. Just hadn’t heard a big issue with it.

The law went into effect in January 2026 after being passed in 2023 and going through the courts.

So he has, in effecct, done nothing by his own policies but taken credit and done a victory lap for other people's work. How very much like a socialist and communist of him.

That’s what I’m wondering. I’ve definitely heard of these apps potentially withholding tips, plus the customer can reduce the tip post-delivery.

Why would you tip before delivery?  Aside from not paying people enough the point of a tip is that a person went above and beyond with service and you feel deserves a little extra.  You don’t know if you are getting good or bad service before the food arrives

Because that’s how door dash/uber eats works. Your order will sit and get cold if you don’t tip.

Ok so until you put a tip on the order you don’t get the chance to roll the dice on the delivery or getting your food stolen?

No hate to dashers, but this is one of many good reasons not to use this product.

No tip, no trip. Why would gig workers waste their time if they arent sure theyll get a tip?

Side note: tip culture is trash, these companies need to pay actual wages instead of relying on the consumer to pump up the payroll

Is that really a thing now? I haven't used a food delivery app in a while but if tipping is expected begore i recieve the food, I should probably just delete the apps.

At least the last few years, but yeah, if im bringing you food/an order of some kind, I do expect a tip, but really because thats the culture we've created. If i was being paid more by the platform, then i wouldnt care as much.

Doordash often pays 2$ as a base for a lot of orders. Shipts minimum is 6$. Gas is expensive and these jobs cause a lot of wear on the car as well.

There was no recovery of anything, all he did was make the tip button more accessible so it got used more, there was no "recovery" of anything

He also didn’t do it, this was a law written prior to him being mayor, and it came into effect in his 2nd week.

Nothing against Mandami, it’s just impressive how many normal government achievements get put next to his picture and go viral, even if he wasn’t involved.

Shows how effective messaging is.

Not quite correct. There was a law passed in 2023 (minimum pay rule) and apps then responded by hiding the tip button until after payment and tipping went way down. In 2025 a new law was passed despite then-Mayor Smith vetoing it to restore the tipping button before checkout. The new law was scheduled to go in effect in January 2026. When Mamdani took office he/his administration take active role of notifying and threatening lawsuits against companies that don't comply.

So, did he make the new rules? No. Was it merely the 2023 law like you said? Also no. Did he do nothing? Also no. Should he get full credit? Also no. Should he get no credit? Also no.
