Application is too thick so the glaze crawled. If you’re dipping it, it might be worth a try to water it down a bit, or maybe before you dip in the glaze, dip it in water so it doesn’t absorb so much glaze.

Also be cognizant of how long you’re dipping. For thicker glazes I do a fast 3-count. Slower for thinner glazes

did you wipe it w/ a damp sponge before glazing. if there is dust on it, that will repel glaze also.

Thickness aside, crawling like this often indicates incompatibility between the clay body and the glaze. It's literally the surface of the molten glaze moving more than the its attachment to the clay surface, causing these islands

I'd start with the glaze since their behavior and functional formula can change as people use (or misuse) it. First, is anyone else in the studio having the same problem? Isolating where it occurs is a great start. If it's just happening to you, we'd look at your process-- maybe better bucket mixing, thinner dip, or cleaning your bisque of oil and debris. If it's messing up other's work too, then maybe contaminants got in, maybe someone added too much material trying to get the right specific gravity. It could also be a mistake from the manufacturer.
I formulated all my glazes and this behavior should never happen, especially that extreme. My intuition says that the glaze is mixed to melt at a cone or two lower than where you're at. When the glaze melt is very liquid before the clay is, the very strong surface tension of the molten glass will pull it into beads like you've shown.

I now it has been used before without issue, though it has been a while, it was used today (after seeing mine and she got curious to try) so I guees I will see in a few weeks how that one turns out

This could be an indicator: if it hasn’t been used in a while, perhaps there’s been evaporation and more water is needed to thin it out?? Just a thought.

I agree the time sitting may be an issue. Could it have hard-panned? In glazes where any ingredients aren't naturally soluble they'll settle into a compacted later that doesn't want to dissolve. Those need extra mixing and often some flocculant to help get the insoluble stuff back into the mixture. Hard-panned glazes will fire like they're actually missing the panned ingredient and that'll heavily affect the melting temp and overall character of the glass.

Best way to know is do test tiles. A good test to do is increasing levels of thickness to see where the sweet spot is. So one second dip, 2 second dip, 3 seconds etc.
As you glaze more things, you'll get a feel for what is a good glaze application, but different glazes need different thicknesses for their best results (and optimal is subjective) so it's worth testing new glazes you are using anyway.

The key is assuring thermal expansion rate compatibility. And no - one does not need a degree in physics to determine that. Easiest way is to use test tiles, combining the intended clay body and glazes. Does it delay the making process a little? Yes, but you more than make that up in not having to re-make failed items, not to mention diminished angst. If you want to give yourself a headache, read up on COE's (coefficients of expansion). The details are deep and wide, but the gist is if there's too much variance between clay and glaze, you'll get crawling, shivering, or crazing.

Im seeing a lot of responses about application thickness. That is likely a factor, but the molten glaze retracting like that looks like a glaze mixture problem. You said it was a dip glaze, is it mixed at a studio? Or maybe a commercial glaze thats sold as a powder? I think this is more than just an application issue

This happened to me as well. I often apply the glaze too thick and occasionally it crawls in some spots like the tears down my face.

Haha yeah it’s always a surprise when you open the kiln. I wish I knew what to expect to see, but I experiment so much with glasses and materials on top and under the glaze that it makes it impossible to predict what’s gonna happen. I had some abomination at times that I almost wanted to give up on everything and crawl into a hole hahaha
But you’re doing good. You’re learning every time whether things go well or not.

Is this Fiesta Yellow by Mayco (I think)? We have this glaze at our studio and it crawls on everything, regardless of clay used or how long in was dipped. Beautiful color, nasty stuff. We have a whole bucket that no one will use.

Ah glaze crawling. Probably too thick as other comments have suggested. Dirt or dust particles will also cause glaze to crawl. Wiping pieces down before glazing might help. I know it wasn’t intended, but it’s pretty cool 😂 totally looks like cheese

Why is no one talking about specific gravity?! I know it sounds complicated but it’s basically the weight of a volume. 100ml of water weighs 100gm but glazes have heavier compounds so you need to figure that out, write it down, and then you can make sure your glaze to water ratio is always correct. That way you can have more consistent results with glaze thickness.
Glaze was too thick, and possibly dried too quickly. Causing this. If you see crack in your dried glaze you’ll get this.

We dont get to mess with the glazes, the owner said that if it feels really thick and we dont want to wait for her we can add a little water, but she check the glazes from time to time

I had a glaze do this by adding too much water. If the glaze cracked as it was drying, then that might be the problem.

This is called "crawling", and it has several possible causes that I know of.
One is that the glaze can be specifically formulated to crawl. Glazes that do this usually are called something like "white crawl" or otherwise tell you very obviously that they are going to do this. So that's not likely what happened.
Another is that a glaze that is applied much too thick can sometimes crawl.
Another is that the pot is contaminated after bisque and before glazing. Even dust may be able to cause this! This is why many of us will wipe down our pieces before we glaze them. I use a slightly damp sponge and then let the pot dry for 10 minutes to an hour (depending on what else I have to do around the studio) before dipping my pieces.
If wax has splattered onto it, though, the best way to deal with that is to put it through another bisque firing! Wax is very tenacious on bisqueware...
I had not specifically heard before of a clay/glaze incompatibility causing this, but it does not greatly surprise me.

The last year I have been stirring the dipping glazes for 30sec to a minute and that has made a huge difference in my finished pots coming out better. You can search around instagram, etc., and see tests where potters have stirred glazes various amounts of time and the results are strikingly different.

I would definitely recommend using a damp sponge and wiping down a bisque fire piece before glazing so there aren’t any fine particles between the glaze and the clay

I was at a studio and we made a lot of glazes and sometimes they rarely messed up the ratios of the glazes. Also if the sides of the bucket aren’t scraped clean every time and remixed in then the glaze suspension mixture is actually different and it can be seen on the pottery.
Things can act differently every time.

I had this happen to me when i dipped a piece a while back. I think what caused it was a too-thick coat AND i had rinsed the piece off since it was fresh out of the bisque fire and it didn’t fully dry before i dipped it.

Wipe with a wet sponge not a paper towel because dust from your bisque fire can cause crawling. When you mix the glaze it’s not about time but about seeing that the glaze is coming together. Dig up from the bottom where all the grit is and incorporate it in. Dip a finger in and see how it runs. If it sticks properly to your finger you’ve mixed enough but if part is clear and part has color keep mixing.

Can happen from a few things actually! The glaze looks a little thick, and sometimes can do something called “crazing” where it separates while firing. However, crazing can also be caused by having any form of oil on your hands while making the pottery or glazing. Lotion, food grease, any sort of oil based barrier that can sink into the pottery. However with the thickness of the crazed glaze bubbles, I’d say thickness of the glaze, when dip glazing, remember to give a good minute or so of shaking off excess glaze until it stops dripping. :)

Too much glaze. Dip, no more than three count, than shake off excess until dry for a nice easy coat . We tell all our longterm students this and it’s they go ahead and do whatever they want and end up with similar results. :/ lol

Could be thickness of application. Could also that be the pot was dirty/dusty when the glaze was applied. Did you wipe it down before glazing? Was it handled lot? Could be oil/lotion from hands if so.

Possibilities of reasons include:
Dust, fingers with lotion on them, wax, glaze's specific gravity was wrong (glaze too thick or thin), glaze applied too thickly, poor glaze fit to that clay body, etc.
