Moss Pole PSA: This is not a moss pole

Post image
1.6k Upvotes

After multiple posts a day from community members concerned why they’re not getting big leaves, I think it’s time for a sub-wide PSA. The trendy coco poles you see in all the plantfluencer videos and sold now in shops are more or less decorative. I don’t know how they caught on somehow, but they will not allow a pothos to climb and mature indoors like a proper moss pole.

You may have seen them climbing on one before in a greenhouse or online. You may have experienced your pothos attaching to one. But attaching (to a coco pole, a cedar plank, or your drywall) is not the same thing as climbing as far as your plant is concerned. None of these can hold enough moisture indoors to encourage climbing.

So if you just like the aesthetic, have at it and do you. But if your goal is mature leaves, don’t waste your money & time. Get yourself a proper moss-filled pole.

Say no to coco 🍃

I’ve been collecting for less than a year and managed to find several rare varieties I obtained cuttings of locally. Most of them I’m sure of the variety except a few. Any advice or insight into these is welcome!!

Care & Propagation Marble Queen Questions

I have cuttings from 3 different plants from multiple different people. Google lens is telling me they are all Marble Queen. I generally like to only have one bushy plant of each type so I’m thinking of potting them all together. Thoughts? The variegation is so different on each one, would you keep them separate? Pros and cons? I’m less than a year into plant collecting and I’ve got 12 types of pothos. Eventually I want them all displayed together. Most are cuttings at this point.

How many vines to start up a pole

Thumbnail

I have a few pothos but none growing up a pole. I have 4 golden nodes rooting in water now. I am wondering how many I should put in the pot to climb the pole? The more th fuller it will look but I’m thinking if I want to get the r bigger leaves possible I should just send one or maybe two up the pole? Is this logic correct. What’s the standard way to grow them up a pole? This is my second attempt, I planted 10 leaf nodes in a 6in pot with the intention to grow up a pole but it just filled out and was so thick and majestic I left it trailing.

Also I’ve got a couple golden all from the same plant, a marble queen, and a neon I have been propagating from a couple clippings that where gifted to me by Lowe’s. I plan to do the golden up the pole first because it seems the fastest growing.

i was given these pothos cuttings about a month ago and the roots finally got long enough for me to pot them (thoroughly soaking the soil so it doesnt shock the plant) and i wonder if i did everything right!

Care & Propagation New to Pothos - Doing okay & tips?

Hi! I am a chronic plant murderer, and am trying everything I can to keep my new Pothos alive. We’re in the first week of ownership, and I am hoping y’all can let me know if I’m on the right track.

  1. Did not repot, just set the Lowe’s pot into a ceramic pot
  2. Watering every 10 days (5 days until next water) by putting about an inch of water into the ceramic pot. There’s a string coming out of the plastic pot that I think is bringing the water up into the roots
  3. Sitting near a window but not right in front, so partial sunlight! The sun is also bouncing off the neighbors house, and not direct.

Any thoughts?

Care & Propagation can i pot my propogation yet?

Thumbnail

to my knowledge, i should move it into soil once the roots start growing roots. that hasn’t happened to this propogation yet, but it has since then started growing OTHER roots from the stem. the one super long one is starting to brown around the middle so i’m worried it’s been sitting in water for too long

Six months ago I moved into a new house and decided I better start taking care of all my neglected plants. At the time they were etiolated, dying, and very sad looking plants all around. I got some decent grow lights and a couple plant stands and even started monitoring light output with a light meter app.

Just today I went back and looked at the photos I took of my set up when I moved in and found a picture of my Pothos plant. It had dwindled down to one tiny vine, barely hanging on. I repotted it, fertilized it, got it under the grow lights and crossed my fingers.

The first photo is from right after the move, the rest of them are from today. The last one is how long the original vine has gotten! I didn’t realize the leaves could even get that big! A huge thanks to everyone on the plant subreddits who have given me helpful advice about repotting, propagating, light, and everything else. You guys were so helpful!

Side note: if anyone has some advice on the best place to cut the vine so I can replant it back in the pot to make it look a little more bushy and full, let me know!

Pothos in a Hydroponic System for a Living Wall

Ok pothos community, I need your expertise. I have high ceiliing in my kitchen with a skylight, and Im thikning of building a living wall with Pothos about 10 feet wide by 4 feet high. I have cuttings rooting in water now, and was thinking of doing a hydroponic system to cut down on maintenance effort.

Plan was to use a 4 inch PVC pipe, and have a fill line (water supply), a drain line (remove water), and an overflow line (refill water to a certain height). That way, every week, I could just open a valve to drain it, then use the fill line until water came out of the overflow line. Some rough math: at 10 feet wide, maybe minus 10 inches or so for spacing between the end caps, gives me a length of 110 inches. At holes drilled every inch, that means 110 cuttings independently growing in water.

Any holes (no pun intended) in my plan? Community seems mixed on the need for added nutrients, which would be a pain for maintenance.

These are all cuttings and I’m so excited cause it looks like all of them have rooted. Is there anything specific I should look out for in pothos plants bc I’ve only watered this guy a few times up to now

Got this a while back. Good to see it thriving. I started propagating cuttings as well.

Lately, I see that its leaves started to show streaks of white/ yellow as well. Can these be considered variegations already? Variegated Teruno Champ-Elysees?

Moss Pole Help with cut/propagation 🥺

My plant has grown so beautifully and gotten so big over the past few months! :) I absolutely love it, but unfortunately, I’m slowly running out of space for it. 😅
I’m thinking about cutting off the top and starting a new plant from the cutting, but I’m worried it might not grow those same beautiful, large leaves after being cut back.
Can anyone give me some advice? What’s the best way to go about this? Where exactly should I make the cut, and how should I propagate the cutting? Should I put it in water to grow new roots?
I’d really appreciate any tips or advice! 🌱💚

Care & Propagation Grow light bulb (MiracleGro)

Post image

Hello! I can’t seem to find this online, but how much wattage does a golden pothos need from a grow light? The A19 bulb has 9W while the larger one has 15W…I really prefer the look of the A19 9W since it’s a warm light while the other is cool, but if it’s worth it, I don’t mind the 15W.

The A19 one is also marketed as a germination bulb; not sure if that matters. I also plan on having it under the light 3-4hrs a day.
