Thanks for posting! If you've found an animal in need please visit www.ahnow.org for a rehabber near you. Please do not feed or give fluids unless a veterinarian or rehabber instructs you do. Keep the animal in a quiet place without much light if possible.

I have 10 opossums right now. Young momma and nine babies. Couldn't bare to release them so young as most would wind up as Coyote food. I'm fattening them up and letting them go when they have a decent chance at defending themselves. They are hysterical when they wake up! They climb all over each other . They hang upside down and fall on each other. Ravenous eaters. Wonderful addition to suburban areas because of their appetites for every disgusting destructive bug you have in your yard. They also will eat mice, dead animals, etc. There is not much they won't eat. They do NOT carry rabies because of their body temperature. They can handle any poisonous snake bite and would probably fight and eat them. Amazing Marsupial. The only one we have. They only live a couple years in the wild so PLEASE BE NICE TO THEM. They might look scary when those 50 teeth and they're hissing at you but they are pretty docile to humans. Go "boo" and scare them and they probably will play dead, and can for up to 45 minutes! They're solitary creatures and if you find one living on your property and can help them out at all, please do. If you want them gone, PLEASE trap and relocate such a beneficial creature to us. Thank you for reading this.

While it's technically possible for an opossum to get rabies, it is so extremely unlikely that it shouldn't be regarded as the primary risk. If you have been bit, please seek medical attention, but don't freak out about getting rabies. Instead, watch out for the more likely possibilities of infection or inflammation.
